Also, what benefits do I get if I just upgrade my MK1 to MK3? I mean they cost around $200 used, does it worth it? And can I even do that with existing wiring, since I've been on forums for a while now and have yet to come across the MK1 unit. Any info's appreciated, thanks folks =)

Yes, it is an E39, but the system is similar to e38, E46, E53.
If you upgrade from mk1 to mk3, you have to buy an adapter cable, 61 12 6 915 132. The mk3 is faster, have a newer menu design, female voice and split screen option. I think the benefits of an mk3 appears rahter on a 16:9 display, so it a display change is also recommended. Therefore you also have to buy a 16:9 TV modul.

Thanks for the quick reply. I might as well just stick with MK1. Thanks again =))

As Bombolo said already, you have to buy an I-Bus cable and this is a biggest question - to implement this cable into the car. All the rest is simple
