I don't think anyone with a HIGH map would like to part with their money to buy Pimp My Nav to install one feature and then have other POI features taken away that they allready had previously.:banghead:

If the product has the ability to compliment the original without detracting from it then show me the way !!!

Why dont you just make one, with all the original pois and share it with others...
The fault is in the cd/dvd structure for Australia our eu cd has poi-s outside the map data so we have no issues...

That all depends on what the person wants to do. As a wise man once said to me "Thank goodness we not all the same".

You can always have multiple map discs with different POI data for different use...

Yes it does, depending on the type of map and the country you are in. Many countries have the TPD data in the external directory and thus PimpMyNav absolutely "compliments the original without detracting from it".

Unfortunately, some countries: Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, to name a few, have not yet released the updated versions of the Mk4-compatible map with the POI data external to the CARINDB file.

If you have no desire to add your own custom POI to your map, then this tool is clearly not for you. However there are many other Nav users that feel differently, so please respect that.

The fictitious person i refer to would be the bloke you mentioned in the statement below :
Alternatively, if you still think you're losing something, I've heard of someone that imported the original BMW POI that he obtained from the Professional edition of the Australian map.

The desire I have is to add speed cameras to my Australian HIGH map without losing the original POI's. It can either be done or not and I think you probably know the answer. A simple Yes or No will suffice.

A "yes" answer might also include some details of how it is done.

I respect that you and others have different expectations and regret that my comments may have riled you.

Well I cannot say 'Yes' without it being qualified. The map I worked on was not for Australia. But the process was the same. I don't know if BabyMakingWeather was referring to me, as I don't know if he knew me at that stage - it was a few years ago

I did have to first extract and format data from another source, and then compile the data into the right format.

As this all happened before PimpMyNav appeared, I wrote mr own little software routines to achieve my desired result.

I even looked at trying to extract the POI data from the CARINDB file, and started down that path analysing the CARINDB file structure. But it was too hard - the data I wanted then appeared in a different location

So yes, you can do what you want to do, if you can get your hands on the data.
Don't ask me for it as I don't have any Austrlian data.

And you may want to consider replacing the existing POI data with POI data from another source, depending on how extensive and accurate your POI data is.

V14 in a VDO Dayton system

Hi guys,

I have Sensis V14 on an SD card installed in our Mazda CX9 (careful what I say about this in the X5 Forum :) ). In a folder are the following files - they look startlingly similar to the files on my V13 BMW CD:

CARINET ...... 733 KB ... 28/08/2007
BIBLIOGR ........ 1 KB ... 28/08/2007
ABSTRACT ........ 1 KB ... 28/08/2007
carindb ... 92,451 KB ... 28/08/2007
COPYRI ........ 1 KB ... 28/08/2007

I wonder if I created an ISO image, burnt it to a CD, would it work in my MkIV (1999 E38 740iL)...

Certainly looks worth a try as the filenames are all correct. What's the Nav in the Mazda called?

Only one manufacturer of nav systems in the whole world uses these filenames: VDO (originally developed by Philips, but Philips sold the nav division to VDO, which has also subsequently been sold to Siemens).

The system is called the VDO CARIN system (CAR Information and Navigation).

The carindb file (CARIN Database) is the actual map file for your country.

The VDO CARIN system is also the OEM system in the BMW E38 (and E46, E39, X3, X5, Z4) and also in other cars (Opel, VW, etc)

I am 99% certain that you can make this map work in your BMW.

willyroo 06-09-2008 05:53 PM

Sorry guys - I did note in the title it's a VDO Dayton System. Mazda Australia use it as an accessory option in the CX9.

(Edited to add - will try to burn a CD tonight and see how it works. Thanks Kiwi for the pm.)

There are three VDO branches: standard, C-IQ and NGN.
All systems use same map format, but they are not compatible because of different compression methods, blocks identification etc.
You can determine map type by analyzing second line in 'bibliography' file:
DB-REL - standard
DB-CA-REL - C-IQ
DB-NGN-REL - NGN
