MK4 Nav Frozen Screen-Newbie
Hey guys,
I only have a quick minute to post this up, so if i should search let me know, but help would be appreciated. I have a (early MY) 2005 X3 with MK4 Nav (with original V24 OS) and the wife was driving this morning and i went to program in a new destination for her (while on the highway). Essentially the screen froze, i am stuck with the "Input Destination" screen. The Radio will work (sound only), the Nav Screen is froze as mentioned. Now if i had a traditional computer i would just "re-boot" but since the car even when turn on and off, constantly supplies power to the Nav there isn't a reboot. Here are my thoughts: After work today i am going to disconnect the battery (negative terminal) to perform a blue-collar reboot. Is there an on/off switch on the DVD based Nav unit to execute a reboot of the system w/o killing all the electricty to the whole car? Think the negative terminal trick, will do the trick? I am still under 4/50,000 warranty so i can take it in, but i have no time this weekend. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, Jon |
You might not have to do anything, the nav will reboot after car beeing idle for 15 min or so.
To reset the nav and the rest of the car remove the ground from battery for a while 15 min or so And it is highly recomended to update to latest OS, you will be amased how mutch better and faster it is |
Thanks that is helpful and hopeful. I am a big wuss about upgrading to V31, i just can't pull the trigger (call me a pansy).
-Jon Any other thoughts. |
OK, you're a pansy :D
|
You may want to clean your DVD. A dirty disk (or bad duplicate copy) can cause the nav drive to freeze.
And I agree, you are a pansy ;) |
Thirded:D
UCrew talks sense, probably your disc at fault. |
MK4 Nav Screen Freezing
Hello,
I have been having this same problem. :iagree: This has happened to me on the past three trips from Spain to England with three different map DVD's and on two seperate OS versions. The system will work find for awhile and then the whole system will lock up on me. I can not use the Nav screen for anything. After awhile (varies from maybe 25 miles to maybe over 150 miles) the system will kick back in again. I also noticed a couple times if we turned the car off for a break that when we returned the system will work again. I am thinking of buying a protable Navigation system to replace this one (which is a shame and waste of money) as I am very syspect about the built-in Nav system in the X5 and it is driving me round the bend  . I have tried to clean the DVD's and the system itself with not much effect. Anyone have a clue as to why this is happening, and what I can do to solve this problem? Thanks |
Sorry should have said I am using OS V29 with DVD 2007-2 but have been having this problem with OS V28 as well and DVD 2006-1 and 2006-2 as well.

Thanks for the gratuitous pansy references, at least everyone is paying attention to my thread. ;)
Well much like noted by E5M1R it did reboot after an extended off, and it is back to working. Not to concerned, yet i have my 45000K inspection II coming up so i will at least mention it, eventhough i don't think they will do shizzle about it. Thanks again guys. -Jon |

1. Upgrade to latest OS, just in case there is a bug causing your problem that is fixed in the latest OS. Latest is 4-1/100, and is on the V31 OS disc 2. If that doesn't change things, then you have a weak laser. Fix a new DVD mechanism, which you can puchase for a good price here: http://www.navigatieonderdelen.nl/ A new laser will make a massive difference in reading ability. Don't fit a silly little TomTom when you have such a superbly engineered integrated system |

Warm boot: occurs when nav is still active. Nav stays active until the databus in the vehicle becomes idle. After 60s of idle databus, the nav shuts down. You can oberserve this process (and time it with a stop watch if you like) by leaving the trunk open and shutting down the car. The red LED on the nav goes off 60s after the car goes into its idle state. Cold boot: this is when the splash screen is displayed. Occurs when the nav starts up after a full shut down. To force a cold boot, turn car off, close all doors windows etc and wait 60s. Observe the red nav LED at the same time if you want. Once LED has gone off, nav has totally shut down. A cold boot then occurs. When the nav boots from cold, it re-starts everything. The only thing that changes by waiting longer is to let the nav cool down if it is hot. |
Thanks Kiwi. Much appreciated.

Thanks, I will download the current OS and see if that helps. I was hoping V29 would do that when I downloaded it and installed. maybe the fault was on both. |

I'm guessing the lasers on both are dying. I'm trying to figure out what my options are. Can you tell me if this is right? 1. Buy a new laser for the MK4 from that website € 59,00, and a new mech for the MK3 (can't find just the laser for the MK3). Would I need the CDM-M2 or CDM-M3? or 2. Buy a new mech for the MK4 and a new mech for the MK3. But which one MK4 would I need: M2 5.6/31, M3.5, M3 4.6? Is that your website? Do you know if they ship to the US? Would you mind helping translate to English? :dunno: Thanks!!!! |

3. Buy a 2nd hand complete nav 4. Buy a brand new nav That completes the option list I believe. Quote:
There is, these days, no excuse for not being able to understand websites in Chinese, Arabic, Bulgarian, German, Dutch, French, Italian, Greek, Hindi, Polish, Japanese, Russian, and many more languages... You just need to use the right tools. With those tools you have perfectly understandable email communications. |
Homerraas, several subjects town in the nav forum speaks Dutch.

Sigh, I think I may have the same problem, my SatNav has also been locking up, 'freezing' but the car is a 2004 with 'only' 32000km ?! I would have thought that a DVD laser would last a little bit longer...
Anyway, I've made it worse... Yesterday I upgraded from 29.1 to 31 and everything worked for about 20min, the upgrade completed, the SW version was updated, everything was fine until I drove to work this morning, the SatNav "rebooted" twice, then froze. After I turned the ignition off/on the SatNav option has now disappeared from my menu and the screen has a very weird look, it's blue and the menus (Set, Television, On-Board Computer) look different to what they used to... I'm going to try and re-flash v.31, failing that, go back to v.29.1, failing that disconnect the battery, failing that, visit my local BMW dealer and sob... |
Fixed...
...at least the problem of the SatNav not being available. I left the car (off) for a couple of h. So I assume one of those "cold re-boots" occured. I have noticed this myself, that if you leave the ignition off for a couple of minutes then the MK4 "powers off" so I guess this happened and the next time I switched the ignition on the MK4 came on again.
I'm going to try and re-burn my navigation DVD to a better brand disc to see if that helps with the "lock-ups" When I used my original navigation DVD I didn't have any problems, or at least I didn't notice any, then, when I recorded a disc, the lock-ups started. However now, with v.31 SW, when I got my lock-up this morning, it seemed to corrupt the MK4 and a re-boot was neccessary. Anyway, as mentioned, I'm going to try recording to a better disc on slow speed and if that improve anything |
You might have got some fingerprints on your map disk or you have loaded coruped image

The original disc reflects much more light, because the reflective coating is much much better (almost perfect). Thus an original disc is ALWAYS easier for the laser to read. If you use recordable media, the quality of the reflected signal varies a lot between media. Some work well, some are terrible. If your current brand of media is not working well, try switching to another brand. The well known expensive brands are not always the best! Of course, BMW always request you to use original BMW discs, never copies. |
Thanks...
...yeah, I suspected that it was the burned copy that was causing issues, I'm going to try a better brand DVDs and see what happens.
I was just surprised that after upgrading the SW in the MK4 to v.31 the lock-ups caused a "total failure" of the SatNav With SW v.29.1 in the MK4 the lock-ups only made the the SatNav "freeze up" from time to time. But at least "re-setting" still works fine and the SatNav comes back to life. Thanks for all the help and replies! |

Laser: Experience required |
Revisiting this issue, 05 MKIV. New v31 and nav update and no problem for a few thousand miles. Then, like others, funny little freezes that I could cure at first by switching modes, then only by turning ignition of and on at stop lights, then I needed to eject and re-insert the cd. Finally, nothing worked and it was totally locked no matter what.
The cure? Went to In N Out Burger at a busy time. Gave it that quiet time it needed and worked fine. Good thing I didn't go through the drive-thru lane. I would guess that this successful reboot indicates that the laser is ok and the aftermart map disk is good, that occasional problems must be inherent and not preventable? Or, am I wrong there? A reset button would be better, but BMW probably thought that would send the wrong message... |
