Nav Retrofit Questions Please Help.

Hi all

After being inspired from reading through the forum, I have decided to attempt the Nav retrofit on my 2003 X5 3.0d Sport which has the Business Radio / Tape and a BMW 6cd Changer and Screens in the headrests with a DVD drive in the boot compartment

I have bought (from Ebay) a 16:9 Bordmonitor, the Nav Wiring loom and also got an X5 Alpine Amp.

I am missing the brackets to fit the screen I believe the part numbers are 65 90 0 140 347 and 348, can anyone advise where I can get these from?

And also what other items i will need, I have read the artice "Retrofit of the BMW Navigation system in a X5" by JPuma but i am still a bit confused

Also will i need anything else to install the amp?

Thanks in advance

Jon

You also need:
1. Navigation computer. Get the Mk4 nav.
2. Radio module to fit in the boot. Type = BM54.
3. TV tuner (called the Video Module), get the new hybrid tuner, this can receive DVB-T digital TV, and it also allows for easy connection of your DVD player.

You didn't need to get an Amp, as the car already has an amp and the amp stays unchanged. Well, most cars have the amp :-)

Brackets you can get from BMW, they are cheap.

You should also use the Retrofit instructions as your guide....

Thanks for the reply.

I have now got the BM54. I will get the MKIV Nav Computer.
Do I need the TV Tuner to make all this work if I dont want the TV for now, and can this be added later?

I looked in the rear boot compartment, under the cd changer for the amp but couldnt see one, so thats why I got the amp, could it be located somewhere else, or is that the only place??

Shall I go direct to my BMW dealer in the UK to get the brackets, or is there somewhere online i could order them from?

Thanks again

Jon

You do not need a TV module now-- that is optional.

Unless you also want to upgrade your audio at the same time, you do not need to add any amp. That is independent of the nav retrofit.

The Nav will work fine without the TV tuner. If you DO buy one, make absolutely certain it's one of the new Hybrid modules as there are loads of Analog tuners flooding the UK/Euro market as people frantically upgrade to Digital. Analog tuners go from £50 - £100 for an old 4:3 only version to £300 for a newer 16:9 version. Hybrid's go for anything from £450 upwards :yikes:

Also, TV reception on these in-car tuners (in the UK at any rate) is pretty mediocre. Just a gimick really (he says after just upgrading the X3 to a Hybrid module  )

Hi All

Well after an interesting and fun! day today installing the Nav Retrofit etc I managed to install the BM54, the Amp, and all the wiring, I thought before I altered the dash i would plugin the 16:9 screen and test it all worked.

The screen has power and the screen illumination came on and the small square red lights comes on when you push the round knob, but nothing displays on the screen ??

Can anyone advise if i have missed something, or anything I can check, or is one of my componets not working ???

I would really like to get this finished off tommorow but am a bit reluctant to continue without knowing its all going to work...

Many thanks

Jon

Does the Mk4 spin up? Has the Mk4 got valid firmware on it and is the Nav Computer the correct COLOUR version - they did a mono version for use with the orange-screen-in-radio type nav (the Business Nav).

If you are unsure, post the info off the Mk4's data label...

Hi, thanks for the reply

By MK4 do you mean the cd/dvd drive that goes in the compartment in the boot??

If so I havent got one of those yet, do I need one to make it all work??

Sorry if Im being a bit stupid here, I thought i could use just the radio/cd features without the nav until I got the MK4....

Thanks Jon

Yes, you need the nav computer (CD/DVD drive in boot) OR the TV tuner to make the system work

The nav computer OR the TV tuner is the main system computer and generates the graphics for the screen. Without the nav/TV, you cannot see anything on the screen.

Maybe the radio will switch on and you can control it, and view the current station etc on the check control display on the instrument cluster.

However - no nav/TV = no picture.
