MKIV nav blank screen after V32 upgrade - need help
Hi, I have a MKIV DVD nav unit for an E39 M5. I attempted to upgrade it to v32 software. Here is what I did:
1. Burned a v32 on lowest speed onto CD-R media 2. Installed the software - it went in fine, but I realized that I forgot my custom splash screen 3. Burned a v32 on lowest speed with custom splash 4. Tried to to downgrade the DVD with a v22.1 disk. This installed until near the end when it had an error on the media. 5. Then tried to re-upgrade to v32 with the custom splash. This reloaded things, but instead of rebooting at the end it just went to a blank screen. I waited a few minutes and figured I will need to try again. 6. I shut off the car and restarted. The nav screen was blank (black), but functions such as radio continue to work ok. 7. I tried to see if the OS would reload, but it would not. 8. I burned both a DVD and CD version of v32 to try both. Neither worked. 9. I unplugged the cables from the unit for an hour. I plugged them back in and tried a disk again (it will eject disks if I press on the button a couple of times). 10. I tried unplugging the battery on the car for 20 min. I then tried with the v32 again, but same problem. 11. I hooked up the I-Bus serial and I cannot get the NAV unit to respond on the bus. 12. I swapped a MKIII into the system and the MKIII worked. So now, the unit has the red power light flash and I can hear the disk spin, but it does not seem to get anywhere. I would hope there is a way to reset the unit so that it is ready to reload the software. Any help would be appreciated- I hope I did not brick the MKIV. |
Try this one

Welcome to the forum,
Sounds like you have corrupted to the boot image for the nav computer, download and burn v29.1 or the one provided by angel http://gren.exe.su/flash/BMW_V29.rar and insert into the drive and wit for it to load up, then put the v32 (with your splash) and try that. If this does not work, try and use a mode2/form1 image that may work. |
So I took the v24 and burned it with MagicIso as a mode 2/XA and it did not read. I will probably stop by a dealer and try picking up a real disk rather than a burned one.
Right now the drive flashes its power light long once followed by seven pulses of light followed by a pause and then the cycle repeats. My previous burn discs were made with ImgBurn, but I can't figure out how to make it do a Mode2 disc. MagicIso burns at 10x, so I think I want to try again. |

But try with a new OS disc, good luck... |
try reastart
|
I'll make you up a mode2/form1 image tomorrow and post up the link, you can try that then, if you post your splash (or pm me) I''l include that in the update image.

estnavi: How do you do a restart? I have tried turning the power off (disconnecting the battery).
|
Update - tried the v24 from Angelych and still a no-go. Does anyone have a way to diagnose the issue in more detail. I would be open to replacing the drive mechanism, or doing any type of physical reset. I will see if original media may help and if not I am resigned to replacing it.

There is a guy on eBay (I know I know) who says he can hook up the DVD Nav player to a computer and do a reset and then load the OS onto it. Has anyone here heard of that?
I cannot get the unit to respond on the I-Bus with navcode. |
Sure, that's possible.
I've done it a few times. |
KiwiJochen - Could you detail the process? I am pretty handy and could rig an harness to the DVD, get a 12v PS, etc. Please PM me with the general idea and maybe I can give it a go.
|
Well it's pretty easy:
Connect 12V and ground Connect ibus with a pull-up resistor Use NavCoder to talk to and program the nav You'll observe: 1. You have no monitor, so you have to use the ibus to determine where the nav is at within its boot sequence 2. You'll have to manually respond to some requests from the nav during it's startup process. You'll see these :-) Refer to a captured log file of a car... 3. If loading OS, you'll have to emulate the BM button click to restart the nav. |
Did you check the finalize disc box in Magic ISO? I think this is your problem

I've circled it in the picture above  |
So when the DVD is hooked up in the harness now, and I use NavCoder with the serial connector, I see that the NAVE is always not ready. Scanning it does not detect it. If it is in that state, will it respond to button clicks?
Should I just connect the unit to the blue and magenta wire bundles and do a log capture to see if I can figure out where it is stuck? BTW, I have an ancient Navcoder version, so I will get KiwiJochen a payment and get something more up to date. |
Any other thoughts on this? I just plugged it back in and have the same story - light blinks, disc spins, nothing happens. Have tried lots of different burns. I have not tried the media from the dealer. I have not yet sent to to the eBay guy I mentioned.
Any other thoughts on what to do? BTW, I did finalize when burning to answer 535i's question. |

When using eg ImgBurn to burn the image, there is no "finalize" step, because you are creating the whole CD from a CD image anyway. You are not "copying files" If you did not use ImgBurn, then try it. Always use a non-modified BMW image Always burn at the slowest speed supported by your media |
At this point the drive will not read any of the media that have worked in the past. I will try the Dealer copy and if that does not work. I guess I will risk a repair.

Wondering if you can provide some insight regarding what happened? I have a MKIII and MKIV and have updated both a "few" times. I do recall updating the MKIV the first time and getting a blank screen (panic) and trying it again afterwards successfully. I never did figure out why I got the blank screen but when I shut off the car, disconnected battery then connected battery and attempted again it worked. I always heard of sometimes issues with the MKIII NAV units but not so much with the MKIV units. I did do the update so that I could read the hi density disks.

Errors on the CD?
Bad sectors? Dust? Scratches? |

To reset the navigationsystem it seems to bee better, when youŽll only disconnect the navi for any minutes. So you wonŽt lost your calibration data from EGS and DME and other else. (EGS = automatic gearing adaption) (DME = Motorelectronic) |
Basically what happened was an upgrade that got an error, followed by an upgrade that never rebooted (first down to v26 and second to v32). I waited a while on the v32 reboot and then turned off the car. After that it would just blink the power light and spin the disc, but not read anything
I have tried disconnecting the unit for extened periods of time with no effect. I think the unit is stuck - I know it is hard to kill MK4s, but I think I must have timed it right to do so. |
Mamsterla, did u ever get this fixed? I did same thing yesterday. Did dealer os work?

Are you at a blank/black screen? |
Yes, that is what I have just a blank screen.
Tried downgrading rom v32 to v24 and the screen went blank. Radio/CD work fine. It took some fiddling to get the copied v24 out but it came out eventually. I've ordered an OEM v32 hoping to rescue the NAV from it's crashed state. Any other advice? |
As mentioned it could be just a HW problem. Try maybe using one of those CD rom cleaners; or better yet take the whole unit apart and watch it and see how its tracking (moving the head); if it keeps searching then you probably do have a HW problem. I believe somewhere out there in Internetlandia there is a DIY on how to fix the drive replacing the laser. You might be better off taking the whole device apart; relubing the laser head tracks and cleaning the laser head manually and trying the whole process again.

Angelych, long time no hear mate, been busy? hows things?
|
Thanks guys - got it fixed by using the OEM v32. Lucked out that the local dealer had it as the OEM version is on national back order. You can't even find it in Germany right now.
