Reverse light is in the rear light cluster. Speed signal will be at the ABS ECU, as well as under the dash. I don't know where that is on the E39.

thanks for everything,
i had a feeling it might end up with this solution.

the reason i ended up here was another thread that had a similar situation and this is the post that i was thinking of
http://www.xoutpost.com/713678-post16.html

ccfj1 has been helping me find the right loom, but i guess if the black 6 pin isnt there i will end up tapping as per the above

thanks again to bigbob, KiwiJochen and ccfj1

Speed signal is also on the EDC control unit in the boot, if you have EDC...

I recall reading the E39 ABS ECU is in the luggage comaprement behind the carpets. Check the WDS, it will show all the places the speed signal goes to, and the location of all the devices it connects to, often with photos.

AlanD 06-16-2010 03:23 AM

car doesn't have EDC.

@bigbob
I cant figure out how to use the WDS to get the pin out listings that were posted earlier. is there a guide somewhere?

big bob 06-16-2010 03:38 AM

The whole diagram is hyperlinked. Start off seaching for A196 (bottom left). You will see on the left pane the wiring diagram (grey box with two rectangles in it), the photo (blue box with two blue arrows in it) and the pinout (green box with a table in it).

From the wiring diagram you can also click the hyperlinks in the schematics to look at other devices and the connectors too.

If you are having trouble viewing anything at all, you will need Java and/or the adobe SVS viewer.

need a little help guys.
got some help to finish off the installation on my sat nav - a mechanic i know tapped in the wires for me.

is there anyway to test the dead reckoning / reverse sensor?
ive checked in the service menu and see
wheel sensor - 0
direction - forward

the above is regardless of movement etc

does this mean its installed wrong? is there anything to test etc

The Service Menu is the correct way to test the speed pulse.

The fact that it always shows 0 means that the speed pulse wire is not connected. Check the speed pulse connection.

At the same time, check the other important wire for dead reckoning - the Direction of Travel.

This will show Forwards in all gears apart from reverse. In Reverse, it will show Backwards

If the Direction of Travel is also not working, it indicates that the installer did not connect the Auxiliary Loom, which provides the speed pulse and the reverse signal.

i installed it myself. there was no aux loom in the car.
i just asked a mechanic to tap the wires in the boot / trunk.

i guess they didnt tap the right wires, would anyone be willing to post a screenshot of the right diagrams for the connectors as i havent been able to follow wds correctly
