BMW Nav Retrofit Query
Hi All,
ccfj1 has been helping me via email with this install for the past few weeks. i just wanted to post up here to see if there are any thoughts on where i need to go next with this. i will try to outline, as best i can, as to my current setup, what equipment i have ordered and what suggestions have been made to me. i am hoping to complete the install DIY as much as possible and only rely on professional help if i really need to. if it gets to the point where i need the help of a pro i want to be able to specify to them, exactly what i need done so a clear roadmap of actions, along with having the right parts to hand is vital. i want to thank ccfj1 for his help to date, and i want to thank, in advance, anyone who has something to add to this thread :) to start, my current setup. a 2002 E39 M5 TV installed at factory 16:9 screen installed at factory sat nav NOT installed at factory. my understanding from reading various manuals, and talking with ccfj1 is that this means i have the onboard monitor loom installed, but not the supplementary harness for sat nav (cant find a part number for this) i have purchased the following items Mk4 & mounting bracket new trunk trim panel gps antenna (no extension lead) and a retrofit loom as recommeneded by ccfj1 the situation i am now in is that, as i dont have any nav cabling in my car i have 2 unconneceted blocks on the loom and, as i have no gps antenna preinstalled and no extension cable, i have no satellite signal. what i am trying to confirm, from this point on is - what connections are needed on the retrofit loom (there is a black 6 pin with 3 wires connected and a black 12 pin with about 8 wires connected) where can i put the nav antenna to get a signal do i need to purchase anything else will i need to tap any wires my aim is to do as much as possible in the trunk as, since there is no need to install the 16:9 monitor or loom, i want to avoid taking apart the interior if possible. the installation instructions i have been trying to follow are here i can post pictures of any part of the car towards the end of the week as its in getting a bumper repair for the next few days and i can post pictures of any of the wires or parts if that will help so, there it is (i hope) sorry for the long post, i hope as much of it as possible is accurate and hopefully you can help me get over the last few hurdles :) |
Looks faily simple to follow those instuctions.
You have cable B. Check the table on page 10. The 6 pin jobbies (black, white) connect to the vehicle harness. White is power, GND, navbus and iBus etc. Black is speed sensor stuff. Check your loom to make sure they are present. Should be near the wheel arch wedged into the loom. Wine Quadlok is the power and data for the nav. The video signal on a regular car (blue and/or white plugs) comes out of the nav, into the TV, then off the the display. I assume your TV monitor has one empty socket, and the blue plug goes from the nav, into the TV (white), out of the TV into the monitor. The remaining one could be nav audio, and must plug in to the existing loom. What are the wire colours? The audio sometimes goes throught the chunky white 6 pin. Nav antenna goes under the rear parcel shelf, and can be bought from eBay. I think the connector is MCX but double check, as it could be FAKRA or SMB. Post a pic of the back of the nav and the existing harness connections in the car. BTW, all those lever arm connectors are called 'Quadloks' or MQS for short. |
thanks for your reply. i cant get any pics of my trunk space as the car is not currently with me but i have pics of the cable below and descriptions of what i have managed to do so far. hope this is of some use in understanding my current config
here is an image of the cable http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/3483/sdc10372d.th.jpg these 2 are connected to the back of the sat nav http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/9...c10373h.th.jpg this is going to the back of the TV tuner http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/2699/sdc10374o.th.jpg this one is connected to the onboard monitor loom and seems to provide muting etc. there is one wire on the connector which is not hooked to anything and is purple with a red stripe http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/7928/sdc10375ys.th.jpg this one is unconnected as there is noting to connect it too. i believe this is the reverse and speed sensor. the 3 wires are white with yellow stripe yellow with white stripe yelow with red stripe http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/9312/sdc10376y.th.jpg this is the final connection and i have no idea what it does.it is located midway along the loom and has the following wires that i can see blue with white stripe blue with yellow stripe green with white stripe green with grey stripe brown with black stripe red with green stripe purple with red stripe http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/9...10377og.th.jpg |

I don't have time to do it now becuase I'm at work, but here is a link to the WDS. You can dig out the radio by searching for N9, A112 for the computer, A196 for the screen, A197 for the TV tuner. Looks like hte mystery blck plug connects to the wine nav computer.
This table won't come out well but it's a good start ConnectorPinNameFunctionColour X1313 1 30<41ACC Fuse 41 RT/GN X1313 3 K--BusBus WS/RT/GE X1313 1 031EGND BR X1313 9 NAVNF+Nav data 1 GE X1313 18 NAVNF--Nav data 2 BL/GE X1312 1 S_RS+Reverse signal BL/GE X1312 7NAV--BUSNav data 3 WS/BL X1312 10 F--DFAHLSpeed sensor GE/GN X1312 11 F--DFAHRSpeed sensor WS/GN RT Red SW Black GN Green BR Brown GE Yellow WS White VI Violet GR Grey BL Blue |
thanks again, that tool is quite powerful and much of it is beyond my knowledge, so i may just wait until you have time to post some detail.
from my limited understanding, i am able to identify x1312 and x1313 on my harness as the blue and wine quadlocks the black quadlock i have is not listed anywhere - i have found a 16 pin black connector but this is not one i have. the link i gave earlier to retrofit harness was the best picture i could find online, the actual part i have is 61128384473 and was purchased on ebay. however, looking at realoem this appears to be from 98 to 00 and maybe the one i need is 61126915132. on further investigation, the black 12 pin connector seems to relate to the trimble module for the mk1/2 gps units. if this is the case, can i just ignore this or would i need the updated harness? appreciate any further thoughts. |
yeah probably the external gps receiver. Ignore when using Mk3 or Mk4

if i'm right in my understanding, these are for reverse, speed and something else. without retrofitting an addtional harness that needs to go up to the steering wheel and ABS sensor, is there a way i can easily connect these 3 cables? Quote:

Those should be in the car audio loom already. You may have to hunt for them. Should be near the white 6 pin. Else you can tap the speed sensor from the PDC, and reverse from the rear lights, but that would only be in extreme cases, such as very early vehicles.
If Navbus and the white 6 way connector are there for the nav, the black one will be too. They wouldn't put one and not the other. |
id like to hope so, but the white 6 pin is on the boardmonitor harness as far as i can tell and the black six pin is on a separate loom called the "supplementary harness for navigation systems"
i presume navbus is something to do with the white six pin? i'll have the M5 back on thursday so will check the harness again when i get it back. if i havent got the black connector is it easy enough to locate the 2/3 wires i need to tap? (the car does not have PDC) |
