Weird MkII problem
2 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone, lately my fourteen years old BMW navigation system MkII has stopped functioning.
The interface it's showing is different, it presents a 0.5 cm gap from the bezel in the left side, the fonts are changed, the information of the radio stations are changed, it's all messed up! I tried to solve the problem changing the MkII unit with another one, but the problem is still there. When i disconnect the Video Module the screen just goes black, but I'm able to disconnect the MkII unit and still see the weird interface in the monitor. May it be something in the connections between the MkII and the monitor? The red led of the MkII is flashing, so I don't think it's a fuse or relays problem. The car is a 2000 330d. Thank you in advice |
The screen shots that you are depicting are being driven by your video module. The video module will take over control of the screen display whenever the vehicle is unable to communicate with the nav drive (the MkII in your case).
You either have a bad cable connection to your MkII or else you have a bad MKII unit. |

I don't think I have a bad MkII unit, because I bought a used one on the bay and the seller (1800 items sold, 99,6% of positive feedback) told me it was a perfectly working unit. So two MkII units I have at home (the original one and the one bought on the bay) work (or don't work) the same way. The bad cable connection is probably the right cause. Sadly, i have no clue of how the nav wiring are done :yikes: and I don't even know how to recognize a bad cable if it's not visibly broken. |
In the X5 there is an extension cable that in essence "daisy chains" the video module to the nav module. I'm not sure how they did it in the 3-series, but I would suspect it is something similar.
If so, the fact that you have a video source coming from the video module is a good indication that the vast majority of the wiring in the vehicle is not the issue. I'd look at the pins on the connector to the MkII to make sure none are bent. I'd also try to find someone local to you that has a working nav drive unit that you can try swapping between vehicles. This sure sounds like a nav drive issue to me. |
Yes, I think that's the case of the 3-series too.
It just seems strange that the two Nav drive units have the same problem, so maybe it's the extension going to the video module that is flawed. I wouldn't know where to start though  |
I am not sure if it is the same with the MKII as the MKIII, but when you unplug the MKIII drive prior to letting is spin down and the red LED going out, in more cases than not it will ruin the drive. So if someone removed the perfectly functioning "new to you" drive prior to letting it completely shut down it could very likely have been the death of it. I would recommend going the MKIV route if you can get your hands on a unit.

Anyway, I could totally see your point, so I'll try to temporally swap it with some local to see if the problem lies in the unit or in the connections! |
Personally I would upgrade to a mk3 or mk4 mate, the mk2 is very long in the tooth now.
