2003 X5 3.0

Mandatory monopolistic government insurance provider

$2800 CDN/yr net after 40% safe driver discount (18 years no claims)
$1000 collision deductible
$250 glass and comprehensive deductible
$3 million liability limit

No elevated theft risk, all vehicles are garaged.

No deductions for 4 vehicles, they are all similar to this, except the Toyota for the 18 year old, which only has a 10% discount and thus costs $3200 per year with the same deductibles.

There are a lot of cheap insurance rates listed in this thread.

I always thought the no-fault insurance in BC was lower but apparently not. Perhaps it's only lower for shitty drivers because the good drivers are subsidizing them.

I don't have the policy handy but I think I'm paying $1100CDN/yr with $1000 ded. I get a sizable discount because of my professional association and we have our house insurance and both cars with the same company.

ICBC isn't no-fault, by my understanding of no-fault. Since we all have the same insurance company, it is similar in concept, but we receive payment against the policy of who is at fault, not necessarily against our own policy. It is still a tort system, like Alberta.

BC also is reputed to have the highest rate of injuries and fatalities across Canada. That may impact the premiums.

ICBC used to be much more expensive, but it appears that it has levelled out somewhat across Canada in the past few years. I moved to Alberta from BC twice, each time my insurance cost was halved. We can't group multiple vehicles, or combine home insurance, since ICBC isn't in those lines of business, and that hurts us. The biggest issue is that we have no alternative. If you have a dispute, tough. Also, there is an incentive for ICBC to assign blame to more than one driver (even if it is 80-20) as that means that policy premiums go up for both parties.

05 BMW X5

Allstate
$574.18/6 mo
$250 collision/$100 comp deductibles

2 cars & house, and umbrella, on same policy.

NOTE: You just saved me money! I didn't realize that somewhere along the line, my deductibles were dropped that low. I called my agent, and immediately changed them to $500, with a $50 decrease in premium/6 mo.

Doc, the general rule of thumb is to keep you collision deductible high $500-$1000 is good, and comprehensive low. Reason being is the comp for Allstate covers glass, cracked rims, and vandalism. Knock on wood but the chances of a comp claim is much higher than a collision so you want to keep that low. You don't want to have to replace a windshield and pay $500 out of pocket while the windshield cost $900. That $50 that you're paying less a month savings is not going to come out to much. Also note that allstate says unless you have excessive (4-6 claims a year) it will not affect the price of your insurance policy.

Florida law requires windshield replacement at no cost to the insured (ie, no deductible). That removes part of the rationale you mentioned regarding low deductible on comp. Still, good advice overall. Thanks.

$1000 deductible

3 of the 4 cars are, interestingly, all in the same ballbark of $700 per year. That's for the Honda Pilot, the X3 3.0 and the M3.

The A4, which my daughter uses for school, is $2000/year.
