Never understood Fords "EcoBoost" product tagline.
They're always beaten by other manufacturers when it comes to economy and power #s for any given engine configuration & displacement. Ford seems to be catering their taglines, product names and advertising to the uninformed (like the TV ad where the 20something girl states "I can REALLY feel the EcoBoost").

On another note a little rant about the first time I really pushed a BMW was at a "Taste of Lexus" driving event back in 2005 when they brought their competitors cars in all sizes 3,5,7's & Mercs etc. I was interested in the sport sedan category...an IS, 330, G35, C250 some others I didn't notice BUT after driving them all hard on their course (tires squealing, slightly sideways n all) They really didn't care care...the instructor would drive you around like that also if you preferred. I came away wanting a BMW the most, it was the best damn connected drivers car I had ever felt at the time. BIG MISTAKE LEXUS...I know others are looking for comfort, reliability etc etc. but I wanted that wow factor and I had found it in a non pressured driving event in a big ass parking lot sipping on free drinks and catered Hors d'Oeuvres (yes I cut & pasted that)! Two yrs later I said to my wife...it's time to get rid of the Honda Accord and I'll put the down payment on this CPO 2006 330i I just found and guess what? Your payments will remain the same! Win! 1.5 yrs later I did the same and traded that in on a CPO 07 335i...ended up paying about 80% of that b/c I assumed payments when my wife was laid off just after our 1st kid was born n she decided to take a break. I could keep going on about my BMW story but I'll spare ya'll... Go drive an ecoboost you might come away wanting one...or NOT. |

It would be fun to go hoon an eco boost fiesta/focus/mustang around for free. Not paying for brakes, tires, or gas is a-o-k in my book.

Would be a good thing for those intending on buying a Ford or competitor.
A word of warning when it comes to manufacturers inviting people to drive their and competitors vehicles side by side. Some manufacturers have been known to INTENTIONALLY set-up THEIR cars to perform best on the given test track, and setting up competitors vehicles to be "off". This is done with alignment, tire pressure, low octane fuel (knock detectors will back of timing & reduce power), tires slightly out of balance (vs high speed road force balance on their cars).

One that I see is towing, where there are multiple tests of the F150 with the 2.7 or 3.5 Ecoboost. The detractors say things like "Sure, it gets better fuel economy empty, but not when towing...." to justify their larger naturally aspirated engines. But that was the objective. When reading through one of the tests, the towing fuel efficiency of an Ecoboost on a long pull was lower than a specific naturally aspirated large displacement competitor. People crowed about that, while not acknowledging that the Ecoboost climbed the hill significantly faster than the large V8. It simply takes fuel to make power. If the Ecoboost owner wanted to match the fuel economy of the larger V8 on that pull, he just had to slow down to wait for him. My personal choice would be to opt for a smaller engine, turbocharged, in most cases. That could mean an Ecoboost, but it would also apply to many other situations, like the 28i being more flexible to drive when it is a four cylinder than when it was a six cylinder naturally aspirated.

I thought the point of the ecoboost V6 was to have similar V8 performance but with lower emissions?

However, it doesn't really deliver on the higher fuel economy. My wife drives a Ford Flex Ecoboost and, while the 365hp is great, the 17mpg she gets is not. I'm not quite sure that it's any better than putting a 5.0L V8 in it.
