Just got Vonage

So far so good. It was a 5 minute plug and play. We've got about an hour of talk time on it and the sound quality is great. The only difference from the land line is that it is a little bit louder. Just as clear, but I had to click the earpiece volume down one. People on the other end say it doesn't sound any different from the land line. The best part... we're now paying 75% less for telephone service.

No alarm. If the power goes out, the phone goes out. Same thing with our SBC (telco) line since we only have phones that use AC power. However, if the power or internet connection goes out, all calls will automatically forward to whatever number I designate. Cell phone in this case. That and a bunch of other standard features are controlled via a web page and update the account in real time.

I've been looking at it for a while, but have an alarm at my place. And since I live in a 6 condo building and the builders did a crappy job, I can't figure where the entry point for my landline is in order to cut the Bell connection... unless I fiddle around with everybody else's connections

there ya go... can't use VOIP with most home alarm companies, but if you don't have 1, it's not a problem

Put a ring toner on the line in your condo and take the toner down to where you think the wires are and see which one is yours. You can buy one at any radio shack.

Don't have any radio shacks any more up here in Canada - they've been bought out by Circuit City...

I'll have to look into that ring toner though - thanks!!!
Edit: googled it - can't find it - is "ring toner" the proper way to call whatever you described?
