We have two in the Philippines but none here in the U.S. Yes they definitely are great help especially if you have a really hectic schedule.

And i agree with JV that good references are key to finding a good one.

I don't have a cleaning lady our house ain't that big 3 bedrooms kinda thing and I find that I can manage to keep the place clean with a good gut out every second Sunday. Mind you our second home can get a bit dusty as we are only weekend visitors. BUT what I do have and could not do without is a Ironing Lady what a god send I'm not one for ironing.

Our cleaning lady also does our laundry. However, I'm the one who irons in the house. Yes, that's right. I iron. (There, now you guys know my deepest, darkest secret.) I iron my clothes EVERY day, and when Liz needs something ironed, she asks me -- the expert.

I AM a former military, yes. And, how long it takes me depends on how much starch I use, and how crisp I want it. Usually about 15 - 20 minutes for one shirt, though.

I don't think I have ironed anything in over a decade. Either it goes to the cleaners, or tumble dry.

I find if you have someone to clean the house every other week, life is much easier. My wife and I don't mind a little vacuming or dusting, but who has the time or patience to clean kitchen floors, toilets, tubs and showers.

It cost us $100 a visit in the Boston area. I have family and friends in Texas and Florida, and it is easy to find someone to clean for 1/4th that price -and they are happy to do it.

We find it is best to make a list of what we need covered, what needs done and when, (vacuum the top of the door frames, Sheila Shine the stainless, wipe the baseboards, do NOT spray Fantastik on the plasma screen) so that way they know exactly what a complete job entails...we use the spouse of a former longterm employee, but if you are going cold, DO A BACKGROUND CHECK. A half day here runs about $50...also we have central vac and it is a huge efficiency multiplier, not to mention it saves baseboards, it's quieter, and any residual dust is blown outside.
