Thumbs down Dubai managing our ports

I'm very surprised that no one here has brought up the recent issue of the Gov't of Dubai purchasing P&O, who currently manages our port operations, and our President not having a problem with this. I am the only one who thinks this is insanity ?

It is totally insane. I think it was something that some lower level adminstration people were hoping to slide past everyone. I wonder what they were paid.

BTW, Wagner did post about it.

The most intriguing part of this is the back room dealing that our Prez has been conducting with his old pals (from the days when he drilled 93 holes in Texas and never even struck a drop of oil), SHADY how this all came about. Guess who has so much friggin' money that they are building islands in the middle of the friggin' sea? ISLANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA!

Not the rubes down in Balmer who unload and load those Conex boxes, that's for sure.

Dubai- they know they're running out of oil, and they are trying to diversify their portfolio. I applaud that kind of thinking. BUT! I think Bushy is making it too easy for people who are in return going to give him favors and a free room for life at that bad-ass hotel.

I think this whole thing is a bad idea. This is not a private company that is taking over the ports. This is foreign government that has been linked to terrorist in the past. Are we really supposed to lay down and let this happen. I cant believe "W" is allowing this to happen. I support W...but damn...this is just dumb. I am sure there are back door talks about the the airbase we have in UAE...but we are talking about our national security. Is this a strategic chess game W is playing with the dems...or did he finally fall off his knocker. I think most of us agree regardless of our political affiliation that this is a bad idea.

Great thread, Red!

This is not a defense of a very poorly handled issue. And this is not an excuse for our government to ignore or respond arrogantly to our concerns. This being said, Dubai World Ports has a pretty good track record in terms of management, and the assumption is that the shareholders of P&O did their homework before agreeing to the purchase...shipping is so internationalized as it is--and, only about 2% of containers arriving on our shores are even inspected. It is likely that terrorists would originate from an EU or Asian "friendly" port anyway. Regardless of who owns the port management company, the customs and security are still controlled by the US. No doubt there is a quid pro quo in that Dubai is seen as a moderate, friendly ally, and it is emerging as a new Hong Kong in many ways. I would argue that Dubai would would excercise extreme diligence in terms of security, as any slip-up on their part would basically shut them out of the business. i.e., I would be safer flying Israel's El Al anywhere in the world because of their security meausures. Keep in mind one of the biggest single shareholders of Citigroup is Saudi Prince Walid Ibn Talal. Have Saudi terrorists infiltrated our financial markets? No. Were some of the 9/11 hijackers of Saudi origin? Yes. http://service.spiegel.de/cache/inte...339427,00.html

I would submit that electronic terrorism is a far greater threat than a rudimentary bomb hidden in a container--which may or may not detonate. Here's an idea--let's allow Dubai World Ports to manage our border with Mexico...I'll bet the title to my X5 they would get things sorted out in about 90 days to the benefit of our security while providing economic opportunity for Mexicans who simply want to earn an honest living. (It's the Border, stupid)
