Remember the Greatest Generation

We lost a neighbor yesterday. 86 years old. Lived with his wife in the same house they honeymooned in. Still drove, cooked and did all the shopping. Returned from the store yesterday afternoon and slipped quietly away in his chair. He was a good man.

I want to honor him not only as a friend, but because he was a WWII vet who was in the Checkerboard Battalion, one of the units who saw the very worst of the fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. The real, heavy, close-in, old fashioned stuff, against an opponent every bit our equal, the winning of which left the free world another chance to write the next chapter of history.

I salute your neighbor. Unfortunately many people seem to get frustrated with our elders instead of treating them with the respect they deserve. I so enjoyed speaking with my great grandmother before she passed away (she was 96) about how things were when she was young. Think about the changes they saw in their lifetime, not to mention the affect they had on ours.

Rest in Peace..

The younger generations of today often forget what a dark and troubled world it was when our parents and grandparents were young. Europe and Asia were in chaos, and the U.S. became the last hope for freedom. Take time to remember the accomplishments and sacrafices made by those of the greatest generation. We owe our lives today to them!

All my respect and admiration to your neighbor and every member of the Greatest Generation. What a wonderful, selfless and patriotic generation. Soon, none will be left, and how sad that will be.

Juan

They sacrificed so that we can bitch and moan in freedom.

We should be grateful to them, and ashamed of ourselves.

But we can also do more. We can honor those we respect by working hard at retaining the values and ethics established by our elders instead of allowing the world we live in plunge into the abyss of curruption. Not everyone will agree with where things are headed but ask those have have traveled life's road and perhaps what they have seen over the years will convince us to do all we can to fight for what is right. I also salute your neighbor.

So the next time you see a slow Buick in front of you, dont get pissed, be patient and say thanks. ( Respect seems to be a vanishing word nowadays. )

Amen! I also thank God we did not have the news media of today back then. If so, they would have been screaming for us to negotiate a 'peace' within 4 months after Pearl Harbor. That generation's sacrifice was monumental. That kind of loyalty and love of country is shamefully rare today.
