When someone gets in your way....

What do you do when someone is in front of you, going slowly, and won't move over? Do you just wait it out or you get impatient... Honking, flashing lights, etc...?
I'm just wondering because I had someone in front of me going like 50 on the highway and they would NOT move over! Just wondering if you all live up to your reputation as BMW drivers or if you're patient.

CJ, you can't actually hold up a sign for them, so I'd say stimulate the 2 out of the 5 senses that are applicable- let them see the flash of your lights and if that doesn't work, let them hear the sound of your horn. How does that person know you're not speeding towards the hospital or some other emergency anyhow? The problem comes when they identify the Bimmer or similar car in the rearview- if they're not in one, they think you're just another Yuppie prick, or in my case, that I stole the car.

CJ,

I always try to be polite: follow closely behind, maybe even flash my lights once. If they still don't move over, I will occasionally pass them on the right lane, though I hate doing that (and prefer not to). We've just got to live with the fact that there are some a**holes on the road. Their seeing the roundel on the rear-view mirror probably does not help. I've had people SPEED UP when I try to pass them on the right to try to keep me from passing them... What can you do?

Juan

1 (please move away) Flash your high beams 3 or 4 times
2 (you're causing me grief) Leave your high beams on; if the driver ever uses their rear-view mirror, the will move over to avoid being blinded
3 (perhaps I should wake you up) Friendly honk (a series of short honks)
4 (maybe you'll hear this over your 15" subwoofer) Unfriendly honk (long one)
5 (i'll show you!) Shift into your lowest possible gear, and wait for a gap on the right
6 (die b*tch, die!) Fire to the left into oncoming traffic (Bulgarian style); perform this only if you have a dotted center line, and if you have enough space to perform the manuever

I guess I am kinda patient. I would generally just follow their bumper really close and wait until I can pass them.

Driving in city traffic every day, I can tell you I have very little patience for slow drivers in the left lane (and neither does anyone else). If I can safely pass them in another lane, I will.

Weekends can be especially tough as you have families out cruising the roads which, sometimes, are paying more attention to junior in the back seat than the traffic around them.

I generally do the same. There're way too many left lane bandits and many of them won't move over if you flashed or honked anyway. Heck some even slow down to further aggrevate you.

I followed a guy all the way to work today in third gear in the left lane. I was in third at about 45 mph, hoping to blow by in the right lane. Traffic was too heavy. I could be as obnoxious as I wanted, and it wasn't going to help. After about 8 miles, I shifted to 5th, opened the sunroof, cranked the stereo, and resigned myself that I was gonna half to follow this sh**head for another 6 miles.

Interestingly, in Florida, there is an 'anti-road rage' law pending in the legislature, that may well become law here, that makes it illegal to drive in the left lane at or below the speed limit. You could actually get a ticket for driving at the limit in the left lane. Geezers and whiners are pissed, moaning about punishing law abiding citizens and all.

That law should become FEDERAL law... or at the very least be passed by every state.
