I've had totally the opposite experience. I currently own five Dell's (three are laptops), and use a Dell laptop at work. Never had any problems - that's why I keep buying them!

That seems like a fine machine for the money. Check if you can whether the RAM comes in the form of 1x512MB or 2x256MB.

If it's 1x512MB you will have a free slot to add more RAM in the future. Trust me, you'll need it down the road.

Dell makes two lines of laptops Inspiron & Lattitude. The Inspiron is a mass market computer the Lattitude is a high quality machine that is comprable to IBM.

Newegg has that machine as well, for less $$$....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834146142

I don't have any insight into the non-Thinkpad lines, but if they're similar it should be fine. Did you check out the R50 series?

(by the way, I'm working on 20 years in the IT business, overall, Dell's are unreliable and do not hold up well to the punishment that teenager/heavy user can dish out, if I were in your situation, I would stick with the IBM/Lenovo machines)

Good luck... let me know if you have any questions...

Thanks! As far as physical punishment, no worries (I'm 36). No teens in my house (kids are 4 & 7).
