If you do not use wifi, then you should not get a wireless router. A plain linksys router with firewall or a packet filtering firewall should be enough if the objective is security, unless you are running a WWW server from home

I just picked up that router from Comp USA's midnight madness sale for $10 after three MIRs. I have it wired downstream from Linksys wireless router so that I can use its hub capability to hardwire my son's desktop into the network as well as act as a wireless access point.

Previously, I had a Linksys WAP 11 access point, but it began to exhibit problems dropping connections, which messed up my son's online gaming.

The d-Link configured very easily.

I can understand that with the rebates, these wireless routers can be cheaper than wired routers. Just make sure to disable the wireless option on the d-Link.

edit: BTW, be sure to print out the manual from d-Link's website. The product only comes with the install cd. No hardcopy manual.

You're not using wireless? Buy a wired DSL/cable ethernet router. The firewall protection built into a wireless router is to protect your wireless transmissions from being intercepted. No such problem if you have a hard line connection.

I have to dig around my computer boxes, but I think I have an old SMC Barricade router laying around. You can have it if you want it.

Your last layer of protection is in your firewall and antivirus software. For that, my recommendation would be Zone Alarm Professional and Norton Antivirus.

That model is not the newest, 624 is newer, I've replaced many a 524 for friends because they have to reset every 20 min. I replaced one last week for someone with a new Linksys and haven't heard form them since...thank god. You get what you pay for and I would only pay for Cisco products, there is a reason the internet is powered by Cisco. Also turn your desktop firewall on, (if you're on xp, if not get on xp), turn your ssid off so other wireless leeches don't see it and use 128 bit encryption on wireless.
