And congratulations to her!

We are taking some pride in the Alberta girl that came in second, despite having to learn US spellings of many words.

An Alberta girl came in second getting stumped on the word weltschmerz. I've always thought there was too much luck involved. If you are unlucky you get the word weltschmerz. (pronounce with a v which is the way she spelled it) They should give the same 100 words to all the contestants and whoever gets the most right wins.

A Calgary girl lost out on the word gigerium.

I would have lost to all the contestants. I need a spell checker to write a cheque.

you forgot the "r" and added a "ch"....ursprache......I wouldn't have known the difference if I didn't look it up on google....here's their definition http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...ition&ct=title. Looks like someone just slapped together some letters and called it a word.

Is it just me, or aren't spelling bee's a little silly... Hooray your kid is a good speller... but I would say over 50% of them couldn't tell you the definition of the word! Which in my book is more important and speaks more to knowledge and intelligence than just being able to spell it.

my two cents

But at least you write cheques, and not checks!

There are so many similar-sounding words that if the contestant doesn't know the definition they don't have a chance. They pick which spelling to go with based on the definitions given by the moderators.
