in heavy downpour where there is pour visibility, people here will flash their hazards so other will see and slow down.

My general rule is if its raining so hard that you can barely see the car in front of you. That means that the guy in back of you can barely see you. So put your hazards on to make it easier for people to see you. But no its not a law

i thought that was illegal and not recommended unless you are about to become a road hazard.

why not install rear fogs for like under $10?


Use hazard lights only when needed

Many drivers use hazard lights wrongly, switching them on to show other drivers that road conditions are hazardous. Most do this because the drivers ahead are doing it. This is a mistake, because hazard lights can be very distracting and cause glare that limits your vision and confuses drivers ahead and behind you. Only use hazard lights to warn other drivers that your vehicle is, or is about to become, a road hazard – engine is overheating, brakes are faulty, or your wipers are defective – and that you are slowing down to stop. You should also use it when you are in an emergency – feeling sick or rushing someone to a hospital – or when the car ahead of you has an accident and you want to warn other cars behind you. Otherwise, don’t add to the confusion.

I was taught in driver's ed that you should turn them on when you are travelling 15 MPH or more below the posted speedlimit as a warning to other drivers overtaking you.

If it's raining so hard you think you should put on your hazards, you should probably just pull over. I've been in that situation many times, and that's usually the best option. Rain that hard doesn't usually last long...

by the way, one would not have poor visability if one would use Rain-X!!

Ive seen one or two people do that before...I don't see how it is a benefit. All it does is distract you from driving.....

Here is another question, since in Maryland (and I assume other states in the USA) require your headlights to be on when your wipers are, why not make the vehicle automatically turn the headlights on when the wipers are set to on?
