As an open democracy, we will always have gaps in our security...the problem is that our system no longer appears to give us, the taxpayers, the best bang for our buck. Obviously we need to spend money on security, but how do we maintain an efficient system?

In the private sector, there is motivation to spend money wisely...there is no such thing in the public sector. Take again the example of the money Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale received (your money)...how do you know it will be spent wisely? Will it spent on more tasers or dog kennels or will it go toward an integrated defense network that works in concert with all the other agencies?

Example: There are thousands of easily traversed acres of land all around Orlando International, hundreds of places to launch a Stinger missile from, but who is watching this?

If the current pattern continues, the money will be spent on a no-bid contract with whichever corporation gives the largest campaign contribution to the politicians who are in charge of deciding how to spend the money. Whether or not it helps security will not play any part in the decision. We need to get money out of politics or this will never change.

Funny how news stories always seem to pop up at the right time. Here is how well the Dept. of Homeland Security works. They cannot even secure their own building...

Washington Times: Homeland Security accepts fake ID

The Department of Homeland Security allowed a man to enter its headquarters last week using a fake Matricula Consular card as identification, despite federal rules that say the Mexican-issued card is not valid ID at government buildings.

Bruce DeCell, a retired New York City police officer, used his phony card -- which lists his place of birth as "Tijuana, B.C." and his address as "123 Fraud Blvd." on an incorrectly spelled "Staton Island, N.Y." -- to enter the building Wednesday for a meeting with DHS officials.

Mr. DeCell said he has had the card for four years and has used it again and again to board airliners and enter government buildings, without being turned down once. But he said he was surprised that DHS, the agency in charge of determining secure IDs, accepted it.
