Yeah, BB...I realize the deal. I only do it on occasion.
It's worth the risk in regard for a plateful, "best served cold". And, Edit: After getting the same "pitch" from 8 or 9 dozen "diff. senders" over the past 6 months, I guess they had not given up on my ol'email being "live" or, not. That is precisely the prob., imo.: the email lists are distributed to hundreds/(thousands?) of senders/bots, whatever. They simply throw out millions a day and never fookin stop no matter whether the email sendee is long gone, dead, did respond, did opt out, didn't respond, etc. There is considerable Urban myth floating around about this crap too. I obviously don't click on bullcrap, etc. A little fun "reply", on occasion, in the scheme of things, has seemingly very little effect on how much I get or don't get. My ISP is cheese and I know it, but I don't need another ISP or email, or... Thanks, Maties.

MD: I didn't see in your comments that you followed this suggestion. It does work. Try it.

QwkAg,
I did that...thanks to Eric for the suggestions. I'd missed doing that when I loaded the new Norton stuff. Spam filters are great; I just wish my Spam Folder wasn't so bulging every day. BR,mD

Look and delete often. Thats what I do with my Yahoo. account. My primary account blocks spam at the ISP source.

I have 1 email address for correspondence and 8 others that I share with my wife for credit cards, bill payments, etc. All 8 email addresses are through one ISP that has a very effective spam filter (Brightmail) that is server based. It's a very good filter, using whitelists. I can approve incoming email addresses, or if people email me using a non-whitelisted address, the filter sends them back an email asking them to confirm their email address. They must do so by using by key entering a word contained in a graphically distorted image into a box (the de facto standard in online verifications). Brightmail also uses confirmed blacklisted IP addesses of known spammer sites.
I've been doing this for 3 years. It is very effective and I have very little spam that I personally have to deal with, even though my main email address receives approximately 30 spams per day that I never see. I change my remaining 7 email addresses frequently - every 2 or 3 months. If I ever receive any spams to these addresses, I delete them and replace them with new addresses. Yes, it's extra work, especially because I have to go into my credit card websites and redo my profiles. But it's worth the extra measure of privacy. |
