I agree. I find that I use my 50mm alot more than I thought when I first got it. Great for low light / no flash situations. And it's cheap enough.

i think that that nikon has a 1.5x crop factor, so you really need to get around a 28mm or 30mm to get the same thing as 50mm on a film camera.

That was my point in suggesting that Josh pass on the 50 mm. If you have just one prime, I wouldn't make it a 75 mm.

Nikon has a fast 35 (F2) that would work if you want a 50 mm equivalent prime.

The advantage of investing in a few non-dx format lenses is that whatever happens in the next few years with sensor sizes (dx, full frame, whatever) the standard (non dx) lenses are likely to still have some value, albeit possibly with different picture angles.

Price wise the 50mm prime wins. I agree the crop factor is a "factor" but in no way it is a deal killer.
