Bryant Gumble = Rush Limbaugh?

Ok, follow me on this.

Does everyone remember a few years back when Rush Limbaugh was a commentator on ESPN for (American) football games? And he got canned for his "racist" remark?

Ok, now it looks like Bryant Gumble is guilty of not watching his mouth, although not in a "racist" way:

Doesn't sound like there'll be public outcry on this, just that the NFL itself may not be happy...

All he was saying is that the NFL player's union is extremely weak -- something I agree with. Their counterparts in basketball and baseball make much more money than they do, even though Football generates just as much money. Plus, basketball and baseball players get guaranteed contracts -- football players do not -- they can be cut at any time and the team does not have to pay out the rest of their contract.

True, but if a whitey had said that, Gumbel would be the second in line behind Al Sharpton to wonder if it was racially motivated.

The difference is that while what Gumble said could be racially motivated, what Rush said was racially motivated. He specifically talked about McNabb being black.

This is not entirely true. Football generates much more money than the other sports. Their players are guaranteed a significant majority of GDR (gross revenue)--they are in the mid 60% area nowadays. The benefits are amazing, And the amount of guaranteed money in player contracts is insanely high! Signing bonuses and roster bonuses and the like have worked to guarantee more than 1/2 of all player salaries. Don't forgot--football teams have 53+ players per team and the average career of a player is shorter than the other sports mentioned. This manifests itself in an interesting way--when the Knicks, for instance, sign a Stephon Marbury for far too much money, they can insure this guaranteed contract so that if Marbury blows out his knee and cannot play, the insurance will pay about 75% of the annual salary. Football teams have a much harder time insuring these contracts, and thus cannot guarantee this cash.

I don't think Reggie Bush and his massive contract with lots of guaranteed cash is lamenting over the fact that the union is weak. Rather, Gene Upshaw is THE man!
