BMW 750Li Vs. MB S550; What to buy?

I am helping a family member purchase a new 750Li. He has never before driven a BMW, has always been in a Benz. His recent past experience of benz ownership has not been great. The new S just came out. The next gen 7 series will be out in 2008.

Is it recommended to get the new S550 or the 750Li? Anybody here who has driven/owned both? Advantages /disadvantages of getting one over other?

honestly.. neither after having driven both. S550 - first year model, whole new interface. One of my neighbors is having issues with his already. How about an Audi S8 with the v10? Pricing is in between the S550 and the 750li.

First of all, Mercedes-Benz are not as reliable as BMW lately. However, out of all the BMWs, the 7-series has the most electronic gadgets which are more prone to "bugs" than any other BMWs. Now, Mercedes S550 has even more electronic doo-dads and it is the 1st model year!

Mercedes, PROS: New body style, tons of hi-tech electronics, Mercedes's version of iDrive, more power & slightly faster than the 750
CONS: First model year with potential with potential "bugs", still handles like a Mercedes (definitely not as great handling as BMWs), lot of electronic doo-dads to learn (even more user-unfriendly than BMW), more expensive. No maintainance warranty like BMW.

BMW
PROS: Great handling/power, iDrive & electronic bugs are all worked out, slightly more rear seat room than even the current S550. BMW has all-inclusive maintaince warranty for 4yrs/50K miles.
CONS: Will be outdated in a couple of years, iDrive not as simple as the 5,3-series model.

My brother has a 750li. Loves it, no clitches yet. Has it about a year I guess. He got caught up in that first off the line 745 deal with all the gremlins. They took back the original 745 (02 I thinK) and got him a new '03. Although it was better, still had some stupid issues. Nothing to speak of with the 750

I think the Audi S8 looks damn hot. Better than any 7-series (although facelift did help, but still). But if you must choose, take the 750li. The S550 is just too high tech for my 17 yr old mind.

Honestly I would go with the MB just because it's like having a Maybach.

In the flagship class, MB for sure at this moment in time.
In the midrange class, still MB because the 5-series looks too weird.
In the lowrange class, BMW for sure because the 3-series has been, is, and will be the benchmark.
