I can't resist. Help me.
53 Buick convertible. Years of service: 1. Straight 8 with column shift 3 speed.Totalled by drunk. Good thing as world's oil supply would have been exhausted by now. 58 Austin Healey Sprite. YOS: 4. 1929 technology with Lucas electrics. I thought it was a race car. Autocrossed it. Totalled in intersection 64 Corvair Turbo. YOS: 4. An actual turbo way back then. I liked this car. Loaned it to relative who abandoned it too long on street and it was towed away by the county. 69 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe. YOS: 4. A fabulous car for its time. My first new car. I drove it at 100 mph for long periods of time on late night trips. Had DOHCs, 4-wheel disks that only exotics had then. Sold. 72 VW Van. YOS: 3. POS. Sold it to a huge guy who didn't wear shoes. He threatened me when the motor blew the next day. 73 VW bug. YOS: 5. Totally reliable. Sold it for more than I paid for it new. VW Fastback, Series III. YOS: 1.2. Replaced pushrod tube in rain in middle of night in strange city parking lot. Forget year. 59 VW double cab pickup. YOS: 5. My work truck. Practical. Unsafe. Still in daily use by a car stereo installer. Of course, I restored this, rebuilt motor, etc. 49 Chev PU. YOS: .01. I had visions of a hot rod, but not. Only kept it a couple of days. 69 Mercury YOS: 2. company car. We called in the narcmobile because that's what it looked like. People would pull over when I came up on them. A wallowing hulk of crap. I snuck onto Laguna Seca racetrack and burned off the tires in two laps. 69 Alfa Duetto. YOS: 4. The boat tail design. Great car, very dependable with normal repairs. Used to carry wood and concrete when I began to rebuild my house. Ended up restoring it. Sold it to a guy who sold his Ferrari. Saw it the other day, still looks exactly like new. 67 Alfa roadster. YOS: 3. Same boat tail design. Got tire of restoration and sold it. 64 Porsche C coupe. [I]] YOS: 3[/I Got this as a wreck, bought new front panels, restored it down to the last proper friggin washer. Everything was replaced or repaired. The Lexus dealer put it in their showroom, kicked out the Lexuses and sold it to a lady who had been looking nationwide for one of these. Never lost a concours, is a garage queen. Did all this and even paint at home. Fabulous car, loved it, had to sell it because it needed to be a garage queen. 84 Mustang coupe, 5.0. YOS: 2. For one son. Would have made a great race car. Traded in. 88 Mustang 4 cyl YOS: 2. for other, more responsible kid. World's slowest car. He couldn't catch up to some girls who flashed their boobs. He still hates me for that. It died in LA some place 84 Chev El Camino. YOS: 5. Terribly unreliable car no matter what. Kept it for years as it was useful. Fixed it up, again, and sold it. 72 Volvo 144. YOS: 5. I kept this going far too long. Not such a great car as its reputation. Sold to Volvo fanatic. Probably his last one. 84 Honda Accord. YOS: 7. Usual reliable Honda. Wife's commute car for years. Sold to field worker who resold to friend for a quick profit. Triumph TR3. YOS: .3. Bought as a wreck, sold as a wreck, but a nicer wreck. Subaru sedan. YOS: 1 Not a bad car, but the tranny broke and too much to replace. Traded in. 89 Taraus SHO. YOS: 5. The one with a Yamaha 8000 rpm motor. Bought new. Great car in every way except it just fell apart. I even rebuilt the motor at home, trying to keep it alive. It wanted to die and I had to talk my ass off to get a Honda dealer to accept it as trade. Sad. 2000 Honda Civic Si. YOS: 8. A great car except for long distance cruising as it was just not comfortable for that. A guy flew up from LA to buy it, sight unseen. Low miles, not a dent, no wings or facko speed equipment. 2000 Tundra. YOS: 8. A perfect truck, except for the brakes. I will probably keep this forever. I commuted in it, but only a lumberyard hauler now. 2005 X5. YOS: tbd A wonderful 6 cyl 20+ mpg cruiser for those 1000 mile trips to see the kids and grandkids. Terrible nav, but fabulous in most every other way. The pattern here is clear. Well used old cars, and junk, that I fixed up and drove for years. Same as my house, actually. Just about killed me. Nuthin but new from now on, unless I lose all my money. Oh, well, I still have my tools... |
