I just read a news article on Forbes.com regarding Irwin's death. It was a very freakish accident. The article states that a stingray sting is "excruciatingly painful but are rarely fatal..." according to University of Queensland marine neuroscientist Shaun Collin, but "Irwin died because the barb pierced under his ribcage and directly into his heart."

If he were stung anywhere else on his body, he'd be in a hospital, smiling for the camera, and making jokes about his mishap. But unforunately, fate was not on his side.

Rest in peace. Irwin was both a great educator and a captivating entertainer. I loved watching his show - especially in HD.

i hope the empire he built in sunshine coast (the australia zoo) will continue to grow. he's made a huge impact in wild life preservation. "RIP mate"

I saw that news...damn, I loved his shows:
huge enthusiasm, knew his stuff cold, educational
and great dig outs on the creatures.

Sad and weird; I've been next/over big rays
a couple dozen times...it must have simply
"rose up" out of the sand and flicked its barbed
tail.

Better to go doing something you love, than
laying in the old sack with tubes up the wazoo.

I never understand when people say that about people who died in their line of duty and liked their jobs.... it seems counter intuitive. (not bashing you, you're not the first person to say it)

Well try this, do you think he would have rather had colon cancer for 3 years and died after treatment in a hospital bed, or gone out scuba diving?
