My parents when buying me a car wanted the following things
-side impact/head curtain airbags
-5 star crash test rating
-vehicle stability control (or something like it)
-Xenon headlamps for visability

we ended up with a BMW 3-series

I see flipped suvs all the time, one of my friends was killed several years ago when his 2001 Tahoe flipped over on the 101 in LA, I think its flat out stupid to buy your kid an suv for their first car

Just because your friend flipped his tahoe (my condolences) does not mean they are flip happy.
Cars and trucks flip for one easy reason.. USER ERROR. and whatever your friend did to flip his truck, he probably would have had the same results in a car.
He probably unsettled the car, threw the wheel in the opposite direction without waiting for the inertia in the car to settle and effectively "slapped the tank"..

The reason your friend lost control of his vehicle and flipped is because his skill as a driver was not equal to the speed or situation he was in... Hence driving school..

You obviously have not driven a Tahoe recently, those cars are very easy to flip, it's almost unnerving to go around turns in them. And SUVs in general are pretty easy to flip b/c I was driving a 4.4i sport w/ 20s and almost rolled it (it was on 2 wheels, but I managed to get it back under control), and it wasn't like I was very far over the speed limit, it just takes that one turn just a little too fast and you're going over.

Remember The Ford Explorer Firestone tire thing back in 2001? I think giving your child an suv is the dumbest thing you can do. No young driver has the experiance to be able to avert a sudden rollover, I suppose some might learn but thats FAR more deadly then say a 330i

When I was a teen, the number of my friends with sports cars that crashed, ALL OF THEM..
The number of my friends with SUV's that rolled them, NONE.. Not a one..

Looking at the demographic of everyone I know since high school, the amount of accidents and bodily injuries that occured from a sports car, MANY, MANY, MANY ---
The amount of people I know that have rolled their SUV's,,, Still NONE.. Not a one..

Now I am not saying a 330i is not a better choice nor am I saying it is a better choice. The X5 and X3 are two of the best handling vehicles I have ever driven, period. Even though they are raised.

And just because someone almost rolled a 4.4i does not mean, if that driver was in a 540i vs. a 4.4i X5, that the same might not have happened.

Yes, I almost rolled my Pathfinder once, but I have also almost rolled my Audi S4 once.

Rollover factor was an issue in the past, just like built in Oversteer. But car manufacturers have built recent vehicles to withstand the stupidity of bad drivers. That's why all cars from the factory have built in understeer and rollover protection, be it in the form of traction control or the center of gravity built into the vehicle. Yes, you will still find examples of people doing stupid shit. But there are just some idiot factors you can not account for, in both cars and trucks.

And, if some soccer mom is plowing along in her H2. I would much prefer and family member of mine be in a big vehicle rather than in a sport sedan.

what does a tire defect have anything to do with an SUV?

I would bet that almost every single Firestone related Expolorer rollover was an adult driver. First off, I think that the Firestone incidents were partly the result of people freaking out and not reacting properly. Most adults do not possess the skill or even the awareness behind the wheel to handle an incident like a major blowout. I can say this because I was in a Ford Explorer when the driver's side front tire lost it's entire tread. We didn't flip nor did we even crash. The tread blew off and took the rocker panel with it and damaged the front wheel well.

So... young drivers and SUV have no correlation as far as dangerousness. I had a first generation 4Runner when I was 18 and I was as dumb and inexperienced as the average 18 year old male behind the wheel and I never rolled it despite having spun out on a snow and ice covered road.

The issue was that most people who got into that situation we're unable to control their vehicle in that emergency situation because few people bother to learn how to handle an suv in that type of situation, while Kevin may have done well in his suv many teens would not be and because of that I think a more sensable sedan like my 3 or even an accord would far way better then a suv. Their high center of gravity (the X3/X5 in my opinion is really just a big wagon) and narrow wheel base make them more prone to rollovers then normal cars, I drove a 4runner Limited 4x4 (2005) when my car was in the shop and I almost rolled it because I was so used to how the X cornered but after one unnerving corner I adjusted my driving style
