Moving sucks

I have been moving all day yesterday and today. I had moved a fair bit in the previous weeks but this weekend was the big move where just about everything goes. I have a buddy helping me and I've got a 15' moving van free of charge so that's nice. The very much not nice part is that is has been about 105 both days. As Paris Hilton would say "that's hot".

I don't have cable or phone at the new house yet so I'm going to leave my primary PC at my current house so I can come here to do my Internet bidness. I hate moving. There's stuff everywhere, little things all over, unpacking sucks, organizing sucks, and did I mention it's 105 degrees? It all drove me to buy myself a Sony PSP today. We went to Costco to pick up some stuff and I saw the PSP pack. I had to reward myself. When it's all charged up I'll play with it and I'll post some pics.

Well, back to the move....

I've never moved houses, but about two years ago I moved from the first floor on one side of my house to the second floor on the other, and it was a pain in the ass.. Packing everything, moving it, then unpacking it all... What a pain! It's not quite the same, but I can kind of relate... Anyway, good luck and congrats on the new house.

PNG: not my fave gig...but, it offers a great opportunity for we packrats and emotionally undisciplined, to move boxes of "keepsakes & memorabilia", (Junque), from place to place over decades.
A buck five? Our 40 deg night w/windows open makes for good beauty rest. GL on the rest of the move in and set up. BR,md

Kev - having packed and moved from Chicago to Detroit last year, I can feel your pain. We packed and did some of the moving during the dead of winter in sub-zero temps, but I think I'd prefer that to moving in 105 degree temps.

It's also a good time to find out who your true friends are

Ugh...! I feel for you, man. We're about to do the same thing in a few months as soon as our new house is complete... NOT looking forward to that move. You're right... it sucks!

Hang in there, and enjoy the PSP.

Juan

In the past 3.5 years I've moved from NYC to LA, back to Long Island from LA and then from Long Island to NJ... I'm a pro at it now.

some advice for you:

If a box remains still packed for more than 3 months, you don't need anything in it, so just throw it all away.

Good advice. I would add that it is worth investing in decent packing materials, realize that packing is more important than loading (the truck is the final detail, not the main act).

In 19 years of marriage, we have lived in 13 houses or condos, nearly all moves for my job. 6 moves involved new time zones, 3 involved new countries. The longest stay was 30 months. We got it down to a science, including maintaining inventory lists in between moves, ruthlessly weeding out things we find we really don't need, and working to get everything set up within 2 weeks, always (and that includes all pictures hung and shelves set up, even in a 5 bedroom 6000 square foot house). Our two kids have lived in 11 of those 13 houses, so they are pretty good movers too. I've always enjoyed moving, change is good.

Hope it goes well.

Jeff

In a weird sort of way, theres a lot of excitement in a move...Ive moved from the UK, to Georgia, to Japan, and back to the UK, in just over two years...Now that my daughter is at school age, I dont think we will be doing much more of it...

I think the MOST important thing in the nomdaic lifestyle, is IF YOU DONT NEED IT, GET RID OF IT!! Theres nothing worse than opening a box, and going "Aw, man!! Not THIS stuff again!!'...HAHAHA....

good luck...and remember since you are moving, if you have not used the stuff for one year and they are just lying around in the house, chuck them out. Chances are they are not going to be used anyways. Your crown jewels (twigs and berries) are an exception.
