Yup. Just what we need right after a disaster. A drunk trying to find his way to his AA meetings.

Where I live, the biggest threat is probably a meltdown of the Indian Point nuclear reactor. They've been talking about it for years, but my county has still not developed some sort of evacuation plan. A committee was put together a few years ago to develop such a plan, and they concluded it was impossible. So I'm not exactly sure how one can be "prepared" for that.

Other than that, there is not really much threat of a disaster here. I live far enough away from NYC (about 30 miles away) so any terrorist attack would not affect me directly. And I live at a high elevation, so it never floods here. And in my entire life, there has never been an earthquake here.

When the SHTF, I take care of my family first. My neighbors are grown ass men who can take care of their own.

The Day After Tomorrow!

I often wonder about being/not beign prepared. I live about 20 miles east of Downtown LA and work right on top of the Whittier-Norwalk Fault line. In all honesty, I am not prepared! One of my most worrisome question/issue is "Should I get some type of weapon/protection?" I do not trust that I will be safe in case a disaster were to happen - evethough a live three blocks away from the Police and Fire stations (and closer to the cementery). Will I be able to protect my wife? My sisters? nephew and nieces???? I don't know! I did live through a civil war...so, I do have a clue about certain types of dangers and how to take care of myself. Still, this does worry me. At least once a week/month, I think about buying a rifle/gun. Am I being paranoid!

Very thought provoking thread!

I am actually 100% ready, I was NOT ready in 89 when the earthquake took my power for 9 days and you could not find a battery for 50 miles. I now have a generator, white gas stoves and lamps, propaine tanks to last a week, pills to make fresh water, 10 gallons of drinking water, fuel for 10 days of 24/7 use of the generator and my weapons to make sure whats mine stays mine.

Buy a gun and learn to use it, that is a significant part of being prepared. If something really bad goes down the haves and the have not’s will be separated by guns, that’s a fact.

Like it or not the tree huggers and bleeding hearts will be taken advantage of and ultimately be victims of the stronger criminal element of society. It’s like anything else, criminals will gravitate to the easy mark, and an unarmed disaster victim is an easier mark than an armed disaster victim. If you have food water shelter and power without a weapon, you will be providing those to the first criminal that wants them unless you are armed. There is no other way things will go down, the natural progression will be the strong survive.

Complete agree. Just having a gun doesn't make you invincible, so knowing how to use it safely is very important. Without training, owning a gun will give you a false sense of security, and will make it more dangerous for you and people around you. You don't want to be fumbling around with it when it's time to use it, so practice often to make sure it becomes a second nature, like riding a bike.
