Does Anyone like Microsoft these days?

They are now preventing users from changing hardware more than once AND you can not run Microsoft Vista home edition as a virtual machine. The stupidity of Microsoft still blows me away. This will not prevent people from investing in a Mac, it will encourage them. It will also encourage Apple and Crossover to eliminate the Windows OS all together if you want to run programs designed to use the Microsoft platform.

Why doesn’t Microsoft spend a little more time fixing their software and less time finding ways to make life difficult on users. I have never owned a PC and never used Windows for anything but work. Looks like I’ll keep it that way also.

Microsoft has just published on its license terms webpage the details of licenses for each Vista version. It contains 2 bad news, one targeting directly MacOSX and Parallels users:

- it will possible to install Vista only twice, so you will be able to change your hardware only once; after you will have to buy a new license.

- One can not use emulation or virtualization solutions with Vista Home (Premium and Basic). Parallels and soon VMWare will not be allowed to make this Vista version running on their system. One will need to acquire Vista Ultimate or Business (US$399 and US$299 respectively) to make it possible. It will for sure limit the usage to Pro users, probably a way for Microsoft to prevent PC users to buy a Mac or even considering switching...

Microsoft, in its battle against piracy, might generate so much frustration among honest customers, that the end it will lead to the opposite effect: push honest customers to get their software to work the way it is supposed to work, or look for hacked versions...

I have over 500 win2k3 servers and 1000 winXPsp2 desktops in my organization and they're rock solid. (plus about another 600 UNIX/Solaris/SolX86 servers)

A vast majority of problems that people have with an OS are due to their own, shall we say, lack of experience.

By the way, Vista CAN run on VMWare, you just need another version. It's the same model as now, who run XP home on VMWare?

You do make some valid points. Apple is for graphic artist and interent people.

I swapped out all of my macs for x86 boxes at my last place. Adobe products run equal if not better on XP, IMHO.

I was not looking for a platform war, as a matter of fact I have some serious problems with Apple’s business practice as well. I think any other CEO would have been burned at the stake for the backdating of stock options that our leader Mr. Jobs allowed. That’s another thread.

Already some misconceptions, but I’ll bite my tongue for as long as I can….. m..u..s..t resist the OS argument….. to much work to do today.

You can call Microsoft for a new key at no charge. I did this twice.

I had tested Vista RC1 and I am not sure what you mean by virtual machine. Vista is so nice; but I think we all should wait 6 months after the release date. Vendors need to get the drivers upto date. Several of my programs didn't run under Vista.

I"m not getting into a MS vs MAC argument, i'm just answering your questions/statements.

The discussion is pretty irrelevant to me, real business apps (in my business) don't run on macs/os, and I couldn't care less what an enduser wants on their desk, if they can get their job done with a mac or an X86 with windows, they can have either one, doesn't matter.

By the way, you can't start a thread with a title like "does anyone like microsoft anymore?", have people respond "YES" and then back off saying I wasn't trying to be provocative....

especially when statements in your initial post were wrong.

Computing is about the applications and content not the platform. All this Microsoft vs Apple crap is shifting the focus from why people use computers to how people use computers. Same goes for FireFox/Mozilla vs IE. Viewing web content isn't about using a browser, it's about making the content available. The content looks more or less the same in Mozilla (when it works) so I see no reason to switch from IE.

I'm not too fond of Microsoft but that's irrelevant. I use their OS and software because it allows me to do what I need to do.
