Your salesman is right about the advice. The other exciting thing about the 5-Series is the upcoming xi versions. BMW has already confirmed this and made a press release statement. I wonder though, will they be using the new xDrive, or the older AWD system like in my X5?

I don't see why they don't offer the new engines in the X3 - it's got half a decade to live. As for the X5, they are gonna be replacing it soon, so obviously new engines won't be offered.

I grew up with the 3-series and have been driving one form or another since 1985....E30, E36, and currently E46!!

I think you'll find BMW will put the new engines in the X3....but probably not for another year. The X3 has been out for 2 years (04 and 05), and like any BMW it will go through a 'facelift' in 07....and I'm sure we'll see the engines then.
