h'mm but the biggest point of a dyson (or any other bagless cleaner)

A Dyson when switched on and used does not give you that god awful "pet" smell.

where as the hoover with bags in them do.

That is why I like my dyson

but to be truthful I don't have any rooms in both my houses that have carpets we are "all wood" of "tile" so it only gets used for the rugs.

Had one, LOVED it! Would certainly buy one again if I had the funds.

The best vac I've ever used, period.

Get a Dyson, they're the bestest.

We left the traditional vacuums several years ago, when we built our current house. We have the built-in, whole house type. It is really nice to have the majority of the noise, and any possible dust escape, in the garage! We just have a couple dust-busters around for little things.

I agree central vacuums are the best.

I had a Dyson for a couple of years and it proved reliable. However, I really disliked choking on dust every time I emptied it. Consequently I will always go for a cleaner with a bag now. I currently have a Miele 'Cat and Dog' which performs very well on floors and stairs, and is light weight too.

Our original Dyson (twin tank, low profile) had that issue. Our latest model has a remote release for the bottom flap, and so we no longer get any dust released when we empty it.

Glad it works for you. We had several new houses with it roughed in, and never bought the unit, but in our latest house the builder had installed all of it. It has the powered head, but it still doesn't pick up anything compared to a good upright. The only thing we use it for is the automatic dustpan in the kitchen when we sweep the hardwood floors. The rest of it hasn't been touched in over a year. I wouldn't put one in again.

My guess is that the power head is lacking and might need upgrade.

Does the brush use a seperate motor?

The power head isn't lacking. The head is lacking power. It is working as designed, it just isn't powerful enough. Yes, it has a separate electric motor, for use on carpet only. Works OK in the garage, reasonable suction, without any tubing runs. IMO, it can't cope with the pressure drops induced by the whole-home installation. It also sounds like a 737 on takeoff, so you can't work in the garage when it is running.

I think I have a project here, I could build a simple manometer and see what sort of power it has at each wall outlet on each level of the house.
