"Lawyers representing consumers in the case said Thursday that the settlement could affect as many as 2 million people nationwide who bought first-, second- or third-generation versions of the digital music player through May 2004." Here is the link.

Oh Great !!
So they give us $50 in credit but a battery costs $99. So assuming we want a new longer lasting battery (which costs apple probably $15) They still make a profit by selling us new equipment on their faulty material and make it seem like their doing us a favor ???? WTF????

Well, if I was counsel for the Plaintiff class, I would be very happy (and rich) right now.

Rangerfan,
I hear ya.. But isn't that always the way with class action lawsuits? The attorney's make a ton of money and the consumer gets a tiny bite of vindication?

Well, since I have already bought (and replaced) the battery on my iPod, I guess I can use the $50 certificate toward a new iPod?

The iPod had that battery in it for built-in-obseletion. Apple knew they could expand the storage on the iPod for a low enough cost, they just couldn't do it when the iPod was first rolled out, so they essentially made the call that iPod users would, instead of paying $99 for a new battery, buy the newer and better models when they were rolled out, and a good number of iPod users have. In the end, Apple makes mad loot.
