+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Most members of the community are well aware of the controversy about what occurred on Dec. 3 at the annual tree lighting ceremony on the Mary Jane Davies Green, with residents' outrage first published in the Letters to the Editor section in the Dec. 8 issue of the Manhasset Press. Father Nick Zientarski from St. Mary's parish was asked to give the blessing, a longstanding component of the ceremony, with local religious leaders participating on a rotating basis. What have been called "dismissive utterances" by Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman during and his "insensitive words" following Father Zientarski's blessing, has received front-page coverage in major daily newspapers. Father Zientarski delivered a religious blessing for all and blessed the Christmas tree for which Kaiman soundly criticized him. Father Zientarski was informed by an angry supervisor that it was not a Christmas tree, but a holiday tree and that it was not a religious ceremony. Kaiman has said since that at the time he believed the blessing inappropriate on public property, but now agrees his assumption was wrong. As one resident who witnessed the outburst said, "A public scolding is never appropriate, even for a child, and it is proven not to be an effective way to bring about change, if in fact that is what the supervisor wanted. He could have made his point differently, and been more of a statesman." Many question the supervisor's reflexive comments and are angry their celebration of a Christmas tree lighting was challenged. http://www.antonnews.com/manhassetpr...05/12/16/news/

Funny thing- I was just in the city with the largest number of Jewish citizens in the US and Christmas was everywhere and no one was bitching about it.
Maybe some of the Rabbi's congregation will end up complaining to him when their businesses report lower earnings this holiday season because people in Seattle are just not in the Holiday buying spirit

Ok, I would like to express my issues on this point even though it is a departure from the opinions of the group.
Yes, taking down the Christmas trees was wrong, but so was not having up a menorah to begin with. Or are there no Jews in Seattle? Secondly, I think many of you misunderstand the real issue behind the "Holiday/Christmas" argument. The reason this has become an issue in the last few years is actually (at least in my opinion) somewhat deserved. -- For as long as this country continues to blur the lines between church and state (which has been prolific in last few years). People are going to fight certain extreme examples as a way of evening the playing field. So it's not so much about being Politically Correct, it's more about not having religion (especially if it's just one religion) becoming "state sanctioned". And if holiday's are going to be considered, recognized, PAID FOR BY TAX DOLLARS, then everyone deserves the right to enjoy it equally. The right thing to do would have been to leave the trees and add a menorah. Or nothing at all. B

I think this is out of hand. I mean, I can see how having only Christmas trees and not a Menorah or some other holiday symbol can seem like they're excluding a group.. But is it really that offensive/annoying? If I lived in an area where Christianity wasn't the dominant religion and, for instance, Menorahs were everywhere, I wouldn't mind in the slightest. On the other hand, I don't find "Happy Holidays" greetings offensive at all.. At least they're wishing me a nice holiday season. The way I look at it, there are so many Holidays around now.. they're just wishing me a good Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, etc..

Oh belive me Eric, this has NOTHING to do with Hannukah. I could care less about when, where, or why they decide to put menorah's. Matter of fact, I would say, Christmas is the biggest holiday for Christians. Hannukah is probably the 4th or 5th holiday of importance for the Jews after,
Yum Kippur Rosh a'Shonah Purim etc. In other words, Hannukah is NOT one of our high holidays.. I am not speaking on behalf of the Jews in my post above. I think that Rabbi was a moron and probably could have easily had a menorah put up in the airport if he had just asked nicely instead of calling a lawyer. I am speaking on behalf of people who are afraid of governemt subsidized non-secular programs. Not the Jews who want to see more menorah's. B
