Ebay No reserve auctions

I sold a car last week on Ebay. I was watching 2 similar cars, both sold by dealers. They were both no reserve auctions, one with a min bid of 500, the other of 2000.

As it turned out, no one bid on either car. Both cars are sellable easily for 12k.

So, the question is this:

If I had bid on them both, 500 for one, and 2000 on the other, in no reserve auctions, do you think the dealer would have gone through with the sale?

I think the dealer has to go through with the sale or be removed from eBay.

The dealer would have to sell the vehicle but most likely he'll get someone to shill bid on the item to reach the desired selling price if you had placed a bid. You have to be cautious with Ebay.

You didn't sell that great looking Jaguar you picked up recently, did you?

Sold my wife's car that the new one replaced. It is an absolutely fantastic Jag, Year 2000 XJ8, 35k miles.

She takes much better care of her cars than I do.

We had to make room in the driveway - can't get the convertible out of the garage with the other one sitting there!

Most dealers reserve the right to sell before the end of the auction.

It may not have a reserve but I bet he would say it sold "prior to the end".

My experience with ebay has been that real bargains don't exist.

I tried to buy a bike for about $1,000 and found that the difference in the final ebay price and buying from a dealer at a discount price was so small that I was better off buying new.
