seriously though, what IS the solution??

i for one, as an american, am sick of needing PhD's teaching me the correct ways to learn how to "read behind the news" in order to get accurate information

as a people ... shouldn't we be able to change this?!?!

The solution is to remove the profit factor and private ownership from broadcasting. For example, BBC is non-profit, as is PBS.

get yourself some good foreign news feeds online, watch those that way you don't have to worry about the commercials either...I recommend BBC and also the english version of Al Jazzera is also very good and produced right here in the USA and anchored by an ex Marine no less

ooooh but that allows our government even more control over our news and with how bad you feel our government is do you really want them to have that power?

Government owned and government run are two different things. If you've noticed, PBS has always been one of the largest critics of our government. Likewise, BBC has been one of the biggest critics of the British government. So that theory doesn't hold water.

Well not without changing the mentality of the people...individuals are smart while society on the whole is stupid...there are many people in this world that have never left the town or state they were born in those people don't care about world events, they care about fad diets, springer, what some jackoff backwater anchorman found in the kitchen at the local Red Olive Robin Lobster Bees not about what is happening around the globe. Also you don't need a PhD to know how to properly read the news just look at multiple sources and compare national vs international it's pretty simple really.
