Exclamation Home Security Info - Unsafe Door Locks

Here's some information that is new to me; perhaps it is new to others as well. Normal pin and tumbler locks can be easily defeated with a modified key. This was enough information for me to reconsider my home security status.

The Lockdown: Locked, but not secure (Part 2)

Here's the sad part. You can buy a bump key over the internet for the paltry sum of $3.00.

That is scary indeed but the reality is, whether a burglar uses a bump key or some other picking device versus a plain ol' door kick is simply a matter of how much noise he wants to make. The vast, vast majority of home burglaries are committed with the point of entry being a door or window that was left open, followed by window or door prying/breaking. Commercial burglaries are similar. Window smashes are easiest. Of course, these are the "common" burglaries. I'm sure there are many sophisticated burglars out there who are organized and pick high value targets. As it is said, if they want to get in, they will.

The scary thing about these keys is in cases where someone wants to get into a place and get out without the owner knowing. Perhaps someone sneaking into your place of business. Very stealthy!

I don't put all my faith in a security system but one is a must to augment physical security barriers like good locks, fences, etc. I've also got a pack of hungry pit bulls, 3 alligators, a Komodo Dragon, and monkey armed with a handful of poop so don't even think about breaking into my house.

A good monitored security system with motion sensors and cameras and all is a must.

In pincipal. The fact is though, there are many others who are looking for any advantage to commit crimes including those inspiring wannabes who have no clue. So i personally don't see the benifit in providing anyone additional information they may not have thought of to use against anyone. Case in point. Not long ago someone posted an uncommon way to get into something you already own on this site. (PM ME if you want to know what it is) Thankfully it was removed. Yes i agree homeowners need to be informed but there has to be a better way to help honest folks protect themselves without broadcasting the solutions for criminals to see. Jusy my 2 cents.

In pincipal as well. The difference here is that this thread only links to information that is already out there. If this thread originated information about how to break in then you would be 100.0000% correct.

Hey Kevin, where can I get me one of those poop throwing monkeys? I've only got a lego throwing toddler.

most thieves will kick the door, break a window, etc. I have a good alarm system, but that isn't fool proof. My little dog will just bark, but probably lick an intruder before she bites.

If I am home when someone breaks in, a 9mm, 38sp, or 12 gauge will be part of the welcoming committee.

Very true but a lawnchair a case of PBR and a loaded 12gauge works pretty well if you are on a budget
