Need Help From Watch Experts

I have a Rolex Datejust, steel and 18ct yellow gold, fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet. Watch is 15 years gold in excellent condition. I'd like to exchange it for another Rolex in steel and/or white gold.

What would be the easiest/best way to do this?

sounds like it's valuable if it's 15 years old. maybe you can exchange it at a watch shop...or a pawn shop.

since you've had it for so long, consider keeping it in you family...start a tradition.

I am much better at buying watches than I am at selling them, lol.

Tourneau is one of the few places I know that takes in trades (do they still?)

Now normally I would never buy a watch from Tourneau but in a case like yours, I might consider it. There is a good chance they might even give you the MSRP value on your old watch. They did for me on my Breitling.

If you choose not to go that route, please let us know what you do with your old one. I am interested to learn what you find out about selling.

Stay the heck away from Tourneau, they're a rip off and will bottom dollar you every time.

Call a reputable Rolex dealer in your area, have the watch appraised and don't mention that you're looking to trade it in.

Once you've done that, you can figure out how to dispose of it.

While I would normally agree with Gresch to stay away from Tourneau, in this case, I do not.

I would normally not buy a watch from Tourneau, unless I was trading in. In my experience, they give much better trade in values than other watch re-sellers.

And, if you are buying a run of the mill watch, they will usually give a decent discount. So you might make off better getting a high value on trade in and paying an extra 5% on the new piece.

Do I buy watches from Tourneau? NO
Would I trade a watch to Tourneau? YES (they have given me MSRP value on a watch that I bought at a discount and discounted the new watch as well (both Breitlings.)

So Gresche, in this case, your wisdom is a little off point. I know many people who won't buy from Tourneal unless they trade, in which case, they are VERY good.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I called the Tourneau dealer in Boston. He told me the trade-in vallue is usually 25-30% of what the original price was. I won the watch in a sales contest, however, the original price was $3,088 suggested retail. That would equate to a trade-in value of around $772 to $926. Since a similar new Rolex today retails for $8K I would be getting screwed!

I'm sure I could negotiate a better deal in person, however, with the attitude the salesguy had on the phone, and the low estimate - it's not worth my time. Maybe it varies from dealer to dealer.
