Actually, I'm not kidding. Certainly I know they're not glass, but they certainly look like glass. I can also understand the difficulty in mining them would contribute to the cost, but I don't at all believe they're rare. How many finished diamonds are there in the world right now? I have no idea, but I'm guessing it's in the high billions, if not more. Diamonds, Gucci bags, Coach, LV - they're expense because people will pay the high prices. I don't believe there is another valid reason. That $8400 golf bag is made from canvas - with cowhide piping - woo! How much do you think the raw materials cost for that - six bucks maybe? It's all about supply and demand - but mostly about demand. And of course some people can't understand me spending money on cars & bikes, that's precisely why I'm not excluding myself from the self-appointed suckers list. I just have a harder time giving in to the diamond and fashion gougers than I do the gearhead gougers. I'm not criticizing anyone for their expensive indulgences, I'm just curious to understand what the attraction is to the indulgences that I'm not attracted to.

If you put a $100K Porsche next to a $100K diamond, I'd have a much easier time understanding why the Porsche cost $100K.

On the flipside, if you put a true diamond lover next to a $100K purple or canary yellow diamond and then showed him a 100K Porsche, they would have no problem telling you why that diamond was so expensive. Diamonds in a way are like cars. You have different sizes, cuts, colors, and more. All of these can make the diamond more valuable and also more rare.

Think of it in X5 terms...the e53 at least because I don't consider the e70 worth talking about. You have the 3.0, 4.4, 4.6, and 4.8.

A 3.0 is like the basic diamond you would buy for an engagement ring, 1-3 karats, great clarity, and accepted all around.

The 4.4 would be the ring that has the 4 karat diamond and also has some added accessories on the ring, maybe some smaller cut diamonds or another platinum band.

Then you get to the 4.6. It stands out with added features and a bigger engine. So this diamond is like the purple/blue diamond that's extremely hard to find, but when you see it, you know exactly what it is and how rare it actually is.

The 4.8 would be similar to the one above, but bigger and even more rare. Not everyone can afford to get one of the top end cars/diamonds, but the people who can are the people who know what they're going to get from it.

And you can't drop a Porsche in the shower drain...
