What is Louis Vuitton all about anyway?

I have to admit, I'm not into "designer" anything and I never even heard of Louis Vuitton until I saw Ryan post something about it a while back.

So educate me, what's so good about this designer's stuff? Can anyone show me an example or two of something that you consider desirable?

I've heard of Gucci and Coach, but after seeing some pocket books made by these designers, I have to say, I just don't get the attraction. To me, their products are butt-ugly and the prices are, well, why are these things so damn expensive?

Louis Vuitton things are those bags and things that look very generic...probably because Louis Vuitton gets ideas from generic rip-offs because the generics sell more.

how to spot them

ugly...covered to the brim with "LV"...sometimes a dog is in one...blonds have them (

)...

Well most people are just jumping on the pop culture band wagon and buy it because its expensive and flashy. And basically yes it is a status symbol, just like Gucci et all.

However LV, who was a real person, began making steamer trunks for stage coaches back in the 1700's (dont quote me on the date, it might be 1800's) Anyway he pioneered the square design because back then they all had domed lids. He also pioneered use of new materials. They were very high quality and took off with the upper crust set. Hence how it took off over the years and gained in popularity. Only later did they come up with the monogram pattern and the use of the coated canvas. (Yes that brown material you see everywhere...its not leather..its actually a coated canvas)

Its just been a classic company with prodcuts that, for the most part, really hold their value and status. They all come with life time guarantees so if anything breaks just send it back. Only recently after Marc Jacobs took the design helm did it really take off with the masses. Esp after the graffitti bags came out like 6 or so years ago.

So basically, in a nut shell, thats "whats it all about." Hope that helps some.

Oh they are also so damn expensive because they are all hand made in limited quantities. Thus creating a demand and enabling the cost to rise. And they charge so much simply because they can.

Their expensive, people buy them BECAUSE they can, their is no real need for them other then BECAUSE YOU CAN, I find them beautiful and I feel they make a total statement, I never leave home without one

On a side note: their VERY high quality as well and they have brand cache, while many people do it because their "in" I find they are luxurious and go with everything, for a full history, wikipedia louis vuitton
