NE Miles Davis fans out there?

If so, I want to put together the ultimate compilation CD...what would it consist of?

Big R,
We like Miles a lot, but I've never thought of a "comp" disk...

We just slap on a few, mixed in among other disks, on
the 5 CD changer.

Some fave disks of mine, but I can't really list my fave "tracks"
as I'm not a jazz xpert:
Kind of Blue, Agharta, Bitches Brew, Black Beauty Live at FillmoreWest...
etc.

BigR,
And, it's sorta like asking us Geezers, "what are the 12 Best Beatle Songs
or Beethoven cuts I should put on a Comp Disk?" You'll get an arm long list
of opins & picks.

BigR, I understand but,
you'll have to "go" with a laundry list
of opins as to what are his best "cuts".

Or, just download some cuts off any of
his highly rated albums.

I'm a big Miles fan. Of all the great jazz musicians, his music is probably the most difficult to shoehorn onto a single CD because his style changed from decade to decade and sometimes from year to year. As MD pointed out, there are too many good songs, but with jazz, especially bebop and postbop, it never sounds the same to any one person, so really, the best Miles compilation is subjective.

I'd much prefer listening to an entire Miles Davis LP instead of a compilation. It's much like listening to Led Zeppelin II, that's an album meant to be heard in its entirety. Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid, Ramble On, Moby Dick, and Bring It On Home have to listened to together and in that order with no omissions.

It's the same with many of Mile's albums. Go instead with burning his best albums with complete song lists to capture his many sounds.

These four Miles Davis albums were landmarks, revolutionary in how they changed the jazz landscape:
Birth of the Cool
Miles Ahead
Kind of Blue
Bitches Brew

I'd add the following as "merely" evolutionary:
Nefertiti
Porgy and Bess
Sketches of Spain

As much as I enjoy his musics, there's a few more bop era musicians that I like more - John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, and Art Pepper. I'm not a big fan of the trumpet.

anything after bitches brew is kind of suspect imho (I don't like the fusion stuff) , anything before (and including) is amazing, take anything from his early albums and you're all set to go.

btw- don't forget, he played on a lot of charlie parker albums in his 20's, so you might consider looking at charlie parkers stuff.

this should do you fine:

I think md had a good rec, and the album info here from Mike and Ron is spot-on. My favorite Miles Davis album was Kind of Blue and I still have that cassette loaded in the X5 for long road trips.

If you're getting into the jazz, give Grant Green a listen sometime. Start with "Cantaloupe Island" and then listen to the rest of His Majesty King Funk and your son will have no problem dancing at the h.s. prom

What a wonderful thread. Hope it's still going when i get back. But what has been said i agree with. 2 cents added later.

6:00 PM Ok let's see where was i? Ah yes ultimate compilation of Miles Davis. Man what a personal decisions that has to be. My only suggestion regarding something like this is go on a listening rampage. Go to the library and get everything you can find. Ask to borrow CD's from other friends. Sit down turn off X5World for a while and start listening. Make a note of your personal choices. You know where i'm going right. asawadude has it correct.

But if If you really want to enjoy Miles find someone with clean vinyl pressings and a more than above average system too play the discs. Believe me it's worth the time to absorb oneself in this art to understand what this is all about. The vinyl pressings offer something that in and of itself is an art form that captured the artist at work. If you haven't already please do yourself a favor and try it. Yeah I have heard all the arguements about digital VS vinyl and i offer no arguement for either side except to say that if you haven't heard it then you deserve it. And by all means let me know what tou think.
