Question about Labor Laws....

quick question for you all. i work for a large communications company
as a desktop admin. day in and day out, my customers are my coworkers.
i do not support anyone outside of our company. our company has a referral
program for employees to sell the products that we offer. basically, if an
employee refers/sells a product to a customer, that employee gets earns points
that can be used towards merchandise, trips, gift certificates, etc. up until
wednesday, participating in this program has been voluntary. this wednesday,
we were told that, as part of our end-of-year review, sold referrals are going
to factor in determining our yearly incentive. basically, we have to make 5
sales per year; else, we will receive an unsatisfactory mark on our review.

now, i realize 5 sold referrals isn't much, but i was not hired to do sales. plus,
being that i don't interact w/ outside customers, i would be required to make
these sales after hours; yet, i will not be getting paid during said time. in the
event that i am hurt while attempting to make these sales; who is liable?
would that be considered workman's comp.?

is this legal?

I'm assuming that you're an at-large employee, and that means that you can quit and they can fire you at any time, it also means that they can change your job description, and if you don't like it, you can quit.

legal? yup. sh*tty? yup.

As soon as they change your job description i..e make it official, they should give it to you, that is assuming that you've had a formal job description provided to you up until now. Assuming that you now have additional job responsibilities, are they going to adjust your salary accordingly? (don't hold your breath on this one)

ha-ha. we do have an "official" job description, but it is so out-of-date
it's not even funny. getting them to update these descriptions is quite
an ordeal or so it seems. the last time an update was brought up concering
our job descriptions, my co-worker and i were asked to right it. we did,
but that was the last we've ever heard about it.

so, anyway. to anyone reading this thread. if u've recently added or are
thinking of purchasing any Verizon products (DSL, FiOS, Freedom Package,
etc.), let me know. i won't be able to save u any money, but at least i'll
satisfy my requirements.
