Treating others with respect

I recently observed two approaches to the same issue on the following thread:
Turn down your porn!

A new member has been posting a lot and some people think its a bit over the top.

Here's how two member dealt with the issue:

1) so how the hell is that even an opinion.. it's fucking post whoring. stop.
ok.. so you're dumber than you sound.

2)OK, how to say this gently....

My point here is that if you treat another person with a reasonable degree of respect you will most likely get a better result.

Actually, the "gentle" approach didn't work at all, trust me. There were "gentle" PM's sent to him.

As the poster who is referenced in your #2, above, I can tell you that it absolutely did not work. There have been three or four gentle posts from me, with zero impact, just to that particular poster.

That was followed by several PMs, again, with no impact. I got long PM responses about how he is addicted and can't help himself, how family stress has been a factor, how others have sent him PMs both nice and otherwise, how he doesn't want to be seen as a fool, etc, etc, but there has been no change in behaviour. He is acting like he is in a chat room, not on a message board. I have concluded that it is hopeless. The next step should be termination of the account, IMO.

I would say it's a tricky slope because this board is supposed to be a free forum, but I also understand that if your just posting to post (as I think we all have been guilty of at one time or another) then perhaps it really need to be adressed more harshly

Then I guess that Superman has taken matters into his control?

Still think that the respectful approach had a better shoot.

Here is my take on things as a moderator and someone who has been a part of this board, and before, for many years.

The "post whoring" is definitely a problem. It is fundamentally wrong to seemingly post for the sake of posting and either increasing one's post count or one's presence on the board. The first issue is not that important to me. If someone posts 10,000 posts in one month and the majority of them are constructive, productive, informative, etc, then that's fine. The second issue is the one that is more the issue for me.

One person posting in excessive numbers can create impression to newer members or people who are just cruising the site to get a very one dimensional view of the site, thinking that this poster is somehow representative of the site as a whole. I would certainly think that if I stumbled across X5world and saw as many posts as xnsf posts. (Yes, I used his handle because he put himself out there.) As another practical matter, too many posts of the non-substantive type that he has become infamous for needless clutters the board and keeps threads alive that should just pass on into the great archives of our history. I understand that we ALL post some useless stuff but in this case, the sheer quantity has exceeded our collective subjective standard.

As for the way SANguru approached this, perhaps not the Henry Kissinger of the board but I can appreciate his frustration. Like SG stated, the issue has been addressed before in a kid gloves way before so don't think that the moderators and admins just decided that it was open season on xnsf.

In the meantime, let's get back to enjoying the board.
