Do you tip at the stealer?

I was reading a thread on another board from a poster who said that the service manager and tech went above and beyond for him today and he was very happy with their service. Whenever I've been in that situation I've considered tipping the service manger/tech but I didn't know if they would take it as an insult or would welcome it.

Add this to the other people I'm supposed to tip that I never considered tipping: the mailman, garbage man, UPS/FedEx/DHL/Airborne dude, Ice Cream man. NO CHANCE, LANCE! Buying someone who does you right a nice gift is what I'd do. Effin rich folks ruinin' it for us uninitiated people.

I too have been in this situation. I've written letters to the dealership and BMWNA. Just last month on Memorial, I took my SA and my tech a case of beer.
Small gesture, but they are the bomb........Phil

Yes, I do... if I get great service, which I normally do at my dealer. In the past, I've also given my SA a bottle of wine, and one time, I even got him some olive oil from Italy that he had mentioned his wife liked. These small tokens have literally saved me thousands of dollars (in numerous discounts and/or jobs done "under warranty" that should not have been covered), and always ensures that I get good, prompt service.

Juan is right on the money!! This is how one is able to drive off the service drive with running boards purchased and installed for $700.00. And yes they were brand new in the box. You can't put a price on "Great Service".......Phil

Always, Always, Always..

$20 to my service advisor.. (I tell her to take the tech to lunch !)
It has paid for itself many times over. I also always give her all 5's on the phone follow up report (they see those scores with your name..)
She always takes good care of me.

And it's money well spent..

I've tipped the service manager and the tech who worked on my car. I never tip more than a $20 spot, but being a bartender in a former life, I know that a small token goes a long way when I need something - a nicer loaner car, for example. The writer at my preferred dealer always gets me into the nicest ride available in the loaner group, usually a new X5. Tips are a hot button for a lot of people. A lot of folks believe that people shouldn't get tips for doing their job. I like to think of it as a reward for rising above and beyond "the average." I'm not rich, but tipping, where appropriate (and NEVER every time), is a good way to get people to consider going the extra mile for you and treating you the way you want to be treated, IMHO.

When my kids were born I tried to tip the doctors and nurses. I figured that if I tipped a waitperson for bringing me my meal the least I could do was tip for bringing my twins into the world safely.

They thought I was nuts.

Tipping a waiter or a bartender is one thing- most people know that the majority of the income of someone in those professions is via gratuity- but tipping people to do their jobs is quite another IMHO. You tip a BMW SA by providing positive feedback about their job performance. Maybe a gift of appreciation for outstanding service or going above and beyond. You wanna tip someone for doing their job, hand a soldier, sailor, airman or marine a $20 bill for protecting the freedom we all have to espouse our opinions here.
