Yes it was discontinued. The last model year was 2006. However, there are apparently many unsold brand new GTO's, enough to warrant an entry in Pontiac's current lineup as listed on their website. There are 25 unsold GTO's in LA county.

Maybe you should tell your friend, don't buy a Scion, don't buy a Lancer, go buy a 400 HP LS2 Pontiac GTO. It's probably a better throwaway car than a Lancer.

Well, I think what's turning away Americans from domestic brands is their past reputation of poor relability. Most people see cars as an appliance. They want comfortable rides, easy-to-park steering, fuss-free (read: low tech) computer systems, good reliability (because most don't want to spend $$$ to maintain, much less repair their cars), and last but not least, big cupholders.

Toyota quality has slipped a bit recently though. I wonder if/when the public will get the message.

For sure, I place an emphasis on driving satisfaction and because Toyota doesn't deliver on that aspect, I dont recommend it to friends. For example, I'd rather my friend look at the upcoming '08 Mitsu Lancer than a Scion tC.

and yes the GTO has been discontinued, but you can still get them.

The domestics have to overcome years of "bad press" that they rightly earned. I will say that I've owned a plethora of GM products on the last 20 years and more than a few German models, and i've been lucky that all of them have been reliable. All I've done to my '06 TB is change the oil, wash it, and put gas in it, it's been rock solid. My Z, same thing, not a day of problems.

I worked for MotorTrend and about 50 other car publications for 3 years, trust me, don't base your opinions on their findings.

I'm a vette owner and even when the trade rags pick the vette over a P-car and an F-car I take it with a grain of salt and realize what I would drive if I had the money
The JD study is from 2006 BTW. For 2007, A change can probably be expected.
And Ford has THREE more reported problems than Chevrolet, OMG!

I really dont think you can get a GTO for under $20k. Plus I'm no fan of muscle cars.

The point of the discussion is and was your use of the word "proven" in the discussion, when it's clearly not. I wasn't saying that Chevy was significantly better than Ford, I was disagreeing with you that Ford was "proven better than Chevy", you certainly were being extreme and biased towards Ford with the "proven" part of your statements. The articles that you quoted were pure opinion, not proof . Out of curiosity, so what that the study is for 2006? do you really think that in the last 2 months that Ford's reliability and popularity with Americans has quadrupled and the report is completely invalidated? come on....

Yes, I was just about to add that I shouldn't have usen "proven". I was going to say "proven in comparisons" but then I'd be repeating myself.
So how about "I prefer the Ford Expedition, and some others agree with me"

Oh, and they study was for MY 2006 vehicles. MY 07s weren't included. So yes, if the 2007 brings changes to the vehicle, it may or may not change.
(Ex: Lincoln Zephyr --> Lincoln MKZ. New engine, slight changes, etc.. )
edit: I guess redesigns may also affect it. (ex: 2006 Nissan Altima--> Much Improved(imo) 2007 Altima)

JW, but what was your position at MT?

As many people that agree with you agree with the other side LOL!

I was responsible for traditional IT and about 70 automotive web sites. You can probablyl figure out the company on your own there's only 1 with that many automotive publications hahahaah. Probably down to ~ 50 now.
