Rant on Comfort Access

<rant>

My sister-in-law showed me her 2007 Nissan Altima (mid-grade model) and it has a start/stop button. Instead of inserting a keyfob, the keyfob works on wireless proximity. In other words, you can have the fob in your pocket and simply press the start/stop button to drive.

This option (comfort access) is $500-$1,000 on a BMW yet is standard on a (albeit crappy) Nissan Altima? When will BMW change this as a standard option (just like the rain-sensing wipers)?

</rant>

It's on C6 vettes too... BMW would charge you extra for door handles if they thought that they could get away with it.

We talked about this the other day. Nissan got it right.
As usual, BMW wants the money.

Porsche charges for color matched floormats...there are all kinds of weird things that are options on higher end automobiles...personally it is just another electrical problem or theft issue (the wireless start system has already been hacked on Audi you can get yourself a brand new A8L in less then a minute these days)

On the upside you are driving a BMW as opposed to a Nissan altema...things will cost more and there will be more things that are options such is life in the land of european cars

Exactly... if everyone boycotts it, they'll either make it std equip or drop it... either way, it's a non issue, but i'm not paying for it, that's for sure. (some will say you're paying for it either way by BMW upping the msrp oh well... sh*t happens)

I think it's one of the coolest features and I would pay for it if I had to, but I'd certainly rather not have to. Although it comes as standard on some vehicles, you are still paying for it...
