This months Roundel

This months issue features: X3 vs RDX and X5 vs MDX and as a bonus, X5 4.8 vs new Audi Q7.

Since that seems to be a popular topic on this board...for whatever reason...

So this should be even more reason for those of you that don't belong to BMWCCA to join. It is a member perk.

Here is a quick hit:

X3 was very surprising against the RDX.
X5 was at a loss to the handling of the new MDX as well as, to quote:

Quote:
Acura's previous MDX was nothing more then a warmed-over Honda Pilot. But the new machine, sporting an extremely capable and demonstratively effective all-wheel-drive system and a far livelier motor that offers better performance than its BMW competitor is much more vehicle---and at a price 25% less than the BMW, it represents not only a great value but a very compelling competitor indeed.
Q7 4.2 vs X5 4.8:
Quote:
Dynamically, the Q7 is a strong performer - but it doesn't quite match the power and handling package that the new X5 4.8i brings to the table. Despite its weight, the X5 feels noticeably more athletic than the Q7 and is more entertaining to drive quickly on a twisty stretch of road. ........
The only real advantage the Q7 has over the X5 is price and cargo room....

I was just reading those articles today. I don't understand the cover though - what is that supposed to mean?

I got my issue today, but didn't have a chance to look at it. I'm hoping the cover means that there is an article on the Romantic Strasse over in Germany, which goes by lots of castles, medieval towns, etc. I've been on parts of it before, it makes for some great touring.

IMHO, BMW should release the twin-turbo engine to replace the X5 3.0si and keep the price the same.

I have not gotten my copy yet, but I assume there is an article in this month's magazine about the "Romantische Strasse," or "Romantic Road." The Romantische Strasse is a beautiful, two-lane road that winds itself through southern Bavaria. It starts on the outskirts of Munich, and it ends in Austria -- in a GORGEOUS, VERY old, lake-side town named Lindau. If you ever get a chance to drive it, do so. It's a leisurely, three-hour drive or so... you'll see some wonderful (romantic, some would say) scenery, and even Crazy Ludwig's Castle (Newschwanstein), which -- by the way -- was the inspiration for Walt Disney's "castle."

If you're so inclined, click this linky thingy for pics of our trip there a couple years ago.... Or THIS linky thingy...

Got my copy today...the mail "service" sucks here in SW FLA;
very interesting read, imo. I realize it's one writer's opin,
but pretty fair handed and well wrote, methinks.

From my perspective, based on those comparos,
the X3 is worth the bucks over the Honda RDX, while
the new E70 may not be worth it over the new MDX.

I think Roundel is worth the price of admission for
belonging to BMW CCA, and I'm not nearly a BeamER
zealot; but, it's a very well done mag, imo.

Jay: "The Romantic Road"...the normal "cover designer"
was on vacay when this issue got put to bed.

Yup, read the issue and the comparo. A few interesting notes I was surprised at

- I thought the opinions on the ride would be switched around. All the magazines I've read have complained about a stiff ride on the RDX and a more acceptable (tho by no means comfortable ride) on the X3.

- Didn't think the MDX would stand up so well, even perhaps beat the X5 3.0si when you factor in price differential. Man I almost don't want to admit it, but the X5 3.0si really doesnt seem to live up to its price tag. Maybe they shouldn't have tried to Americanize it and make it big..........just my opinion (waiting to be flamed by E70 owners).
