News to me. I was not aware that Tamils have a different new year than rest of country.

This festival is observed on the first day of the Tamil New Year (the first day of the month of Chittirai). The same day is also Malayali New Year called Visu festival. This day is celebrated grand way in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. During this day make pooja to the Calendar "Panjaangam".We go to temples and special poojas will be done on that day. In Kerala they celebrate this day as "Vishu Kani".They keep a plate with fruits, money, etc. and a mirror in the puja room. Early morning when they get up the first thing they do is to see this.

Thanks everyone! The Tamil New Year is really based on Hindu calendrics, so really it's not just a South Indian thing. People in north India consult the same calendric system for religious purposes.

Significance of Tamil Calendar

The Hindus had developed a system of calendrics that encapsulates vast periods of time. For computing the age of the earth and various geological and other epochs, as well as the age of mankind, they still employ a Tamil calendar derived from ancient astronomical data, known as the "Tirukkanida Panchanga" (cf. The Secret Doctrine, 2:49-51).

This calendar contains a calculation of something over three hundred millions of years for the age of the present earth since sedimentation occurred, and a period of somewhat more than eighteen million years since the first appearance of our mankind.

The months of the Tamil Calendar gains more significance and are deeply rooted to the faith of the Tamil Hindus. Some months are considered very auspicious while a few are considered inauspicious as well.
