The easiest wat to get good lightening pics is setup your camera put the shutter on manual (open as long as you are holding the button) and let go once the lightening hits this also works a ton better if you have a remote shutter actuator (wireless remote or old school cable release)

I will certainly take that as a compliment coming from you MD . I'm sure you can appreciate this as you are a fellow scuba diver. As you know, often on your way out to your dive site you come accross large schools of dolphin. This reminds me of how difficult it was to get a good pic of a dolphin breaching somewhat close to your boat. The last time I tried that, it took 3 rolls of film to capture it. BTW MD, this weeks WWW is dedicated to you, so you better check it out
