perhaps you are not looking in the right spot...
I can see all the user names that were on the old drive, but there is only one of them that I can’t open, it just says access denied.



I guess I could try putting the drive into a Win 98 machine, and hope that the old drive was not a NTFS format .

take ownership of the files and folders you need to see. Creating the same user and pass will not work as the UID are different.

I have another thought. If you have a Linux bootable cd you can boot with that and it will read anyting on an NTFS partition without a problem and disregard the windows security. you can then copy everything to another disk and reboot the machine normally.
